Multi-layer Farming

Inspired by multi-storied buildings in cities, 32-year-old Akash Chaurasia from Bundelkhand, has innovated a multi-layer farming method, which not only allows farmers to grow multiple crops on a smaller piece of land, but also saves 80 per cent of water. Along with training them in person, Akash also has a YouTube channel with informational videos to educate farmers about multilayer farming. 

Human Solidarity Day

Solidarity was acknowledged as one of the essential values of the twenty-first century by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on December 22, 2005. International Human Solidarity Day is observed globally every year on 20 December, spread public awareness and to remind our governments to uphold their commitments to international agreements. 

Vijay Diwas

On December 16, 1971, the Indian army defeated Pakistan after thirteen days of battle, which led to the formation of Bangladesh as an independent nation. To commemorate this victory, Vijay Diwas is celebrated annually in India on 16 December. The day is observed not only to pay tribute to the soldiers martyred during the war, but also to honour the courage, dedication and sacrifices of our armed forces. 

Timely help

Sonam Parashar, a young traffic policewoman, saved the life of 61-year-old Anil Upadhyaya, when he was found unconscious at one of the busiest road crossings in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, on 12 December 2022. Parashar first administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to revive Upadhyaya. Then, she rushed him to a prominent private hospital in the police’s Dial-100 first response vehicle to ensure timely medical help. 

Healthy edible cups

Have you ever thought about what goes into the making of an edible cup? T. Jayalakshmi, a teacher-turned-entrepreneur, from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, has been manufacturing 30,000 to 40,000 edible tea cups in her small unit, using ragi and rice flour as the main ingredients. Jayalakshmi said that she took around two months to figure out the right formula for making the cups, as she was particular that the ingredients should be healthy and unique. 

Monkey Day

Monkey Day, also known as International Monkey Day and World Monkey Day, is observed on 14 December to celebrate the inquisitiveness, intelligence and occasionally mischievous behavior of monkeys and to spread public awareness about the modern threats to these magnificent creatures. The day is marked by environmental activists and non-Government organizations (NGOs) including Jane Goodall and Greenpeace. 

Day to conserve energy resources

National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated annually in India on 14 December to advocate initiatives that conserve energy resources and to spread public awareness about climate change and global warming. To mark the day this year, President Droupadi Murmu will felicitate the winners of the National Energy Conservation Awards, National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards, and National Painting Competition Prizes in New Delhi. 

Noble Deed

Pattan Allah Bakshu, the founder of a charitable trust, Guntur Covid Fighters, started feeding people in need during the pandemic two years ago. The 33-year-old from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, with the help of his three brothers and 25 volunteers, collects leftover food from functions and weddings, to prevent food wastage and has served them to over 300 needy people daily for the past two years.

Also remembered as the ‘Sun Queen’, Dr Telkes was the first to receive the Society of Women Engineers Achievement Award in 1952

Hence, the International Universal Health Coverage Day, is observed annually on 12 December, to promote the need for building robust, resilient and world-class healthcare systems for everyone all over the world. This year, the theme is, ‘Build the world we want: A healthy future for all’.
