SMART route

Dr Jeyachandran Karunakaran, a paediatric surgeon from Bengaluru, established a mini health centre named ‘The Samaritan Medical Aid and Research Trust(SMART) at Kamagiri village, Tamil Nadu, to provide free treatment to residents of the Bettamugilalam tribal panchayat. SMART also bears the travel and treatment expenses of the patients, if the treatment required is not available in the clinic. 

A life dedicated to dance

Inspired by his father, Paramkusam Sarath Chandra from Peruru, Tirupati, started learning Bharatnatyam, when he was in Class 5. Now, the 32-year-old has given more than 2,000 performances in India and abroad and has received several honours, including the Natya Mayura and Nrutya Chudamani. The versatile dancer has established Natraj Dance Academy, to teach the nuances of the classical dance form to the next generation. 

Spreading His Wings

Johnny Basha, from Chittoor, started conceptualising about starting his own company, during his second year of engineering. He launched his educational start-up, Study Comrade, in December 2021. Study Comrade is a platform that aims to help students learn from the professionals and gives them an opportunity to interact with their peers.  

Kisan Diwas

Did you know that Farmer’s Day also marks the birth anniversary of India’s fifth Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh, who was also known as ‘The Messiah of Farmers’? Farmer’s Day or ‘Kisan Diwas’, is celebrated annually in India on 23 December, to acknowledge the important role that farmers play in ensuring the nation’s food security and economic stability.

Christmas is just around the corner. The festival is marked to commemorate the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ and is celebrated annually on 25 December with great joy and enthusiasm. People decorate their homes to celebrate the last festival of the year and exchange gifts and greetings with their friends and family. Have a Merry Christmas!

Did you know that the first National Consumer Rights day was established in India in 1986, by then President, Giani Zail Singh? Since then, National Consumer Rights Day is celebrated annually across the nation, on 24 December, to empower consumers to know and demand their rights and to fight for them when necessary.  

Perfect Win

The Indian women’s hockey team, led by Captain Savita Punia, defeated Spain 1-0 in the final match to win the first-ever International Hockey Federation (FIH) Women’s Nations Cup in Valencia, Spain, on 17 December, 2022. With this win, the Indian team ended the tournament with a record of five wins in five matches and qualified for the 2023-2024 FIH Pro League. 

A Day for Maths

Whether you love it or hate it, it is impossible to ignore Maths in our lives. National Mathematics Day is celebrated annually in India on 22 December, to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan and to honour his contribution to mathematics. On this day, teachers and students from various educational institutions attend seminars and engage in events based on mathematics. 

Green Stores

While on a trip to Europe in 2015, Bittu John Kallingal from Ernakulam, Kerala, came across ‘green stores’ for the first time. Inspired by this, the engineer started a ‘7 to 9 Green Store’ in his hometown, in which every grocery item is sold without using a single piece of plastic. Customers are encouraged to bring their own bags and two per cent discount is offered to those who bring their own containers 

Goa Liberation Day

Did you know that Goa was liberated by the Indian forces in 1961, after 450 years of Portuguese rule? Goa Liberation Day is celebrated annually in the state on 19 December, to commemorate the anniversary of the state gaining its independence from the Portuguese. Goa celebrates the day with various events, including a torch procession that ends at Panaji’s Azad Maidan.
