Dr Jeyachandran Karunakaran, a paediatric surgeon from Bengaluru, established a mini health centre named ‘The Samaritan Medical Aid and Research Trust’ (SMART) at Kamagiri village, Tamil Nadu, to provide free treatment to residents of the Bettamugilalam tribal panchayat. SMART also bears the travel and treatment expenses of the patients, if the treatment required is not available in the clinic.
