Well-deserved recognition

Navaneeth Krishnan, a native of Angamaly, Kerala, recently processed images of the Northern Cyclones on Jupiter taken from JunoCam, the public engagement camera aboard the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Juno spacecraft. NASA credited Navaneeth for enhancing the colour and contrast of the image and published four images he processed of its Jupiter Mission. 

Messiah of Birds

In 2011, Prince Mehra from Chandigarh found two electrocuted pigeons, in a roadside dustbin. This unfortunate incident motivated him to do something for birds in distress. Mehra converted his bicycle into an ambulance for injured birds and has treated 1,150 birds in the past 11 years. He also buries the dead birds properly, by digging pits on the roadside where they are found. 

New Deputy Mayor

Chinta Devi retired from the municipality two years ago. But her commitment to her work as a sweeper and her active participation in social work during the pandemic, has won the hearts and respect of the residents of Gaya, Bihar. The 60-year-old was recently elected as the new deputy mayor of Gaya among eleven candidates, on 30 December, 2022. 

Happy Vaikunta Ekadashi

Vaikunta Ekadashi is celebrated annually in India on the eleventh day of the Pausha month. This year, the day falls on 2 January, 2023. It is believed that the doors of Vaikuntha (Lord Vishnu’s heavenly abode) remain open on this day. Devotees fast throughout the day and worship Lord Vishnu with their families.

Noble Initiative

Samir Lakhani started his initiative, Eco Soap Bank, in 2014, to provide freshly prepared soap bars to the poor for free. He does this by collecting and recycling unused or partially used soaps from hotels. Then, he sanitises and sterilises them to prepare fresh ones for the rural population, who lack access to fresh soaps. 

Hunter turned Teacher

Although K. Govindan hails from the Mullur Kurma community of Wayanad, who hunted animals for food, he turned into a vegetarian a few years ago. The 72-year-old decided to put his archery skills to better use. He now teaches ancient archery techniques to the younger generation in an attempt to preserve this age-old skill. People from all over the world come to watch and learn from him. 

New Discoveries

Kandula Savitri, a history lecturer of the Government Degree College for Women, Srikalahasti, with her team, has recently discovered two hill caves in Andhra Pradesh, believed to be used by early man. One cave was found near Bhairavakona hill temple in Prakasam district, and the other on the banks of the Jampaleru rivulet. Savitri gathered information from the Mohiuddinpuram village elders and some of the aged priests of the local temples for her research. 

Unique enterprise

As babies outgrow things including clothes that were bought for them a few weeks before, many baby products in a perfectly good condition end up in a truck or storage room. In order to solve this issue, friends duo, Neha Goenka Shroff and Swarna Daga Mimani started a platform ‘Yobler’, which gives the opportunity to mothers to sell their baby products, at an affordable price and in a sustainable way. 

Zero-wood Board

B.L. Bengani from Chennai, wanted to find an environment-friendly and sustainable alternative to plywood, after working in the plywood manufacturing industry for four decades. After two years of research, he innovated a zero-wood board made with agricultural husk and named it as ‘The Natural Fibre Composite Board’ (NFC Board). This alternative is water-proof, fully recyclable, malleable and involves no wood in its making.
