What makes a story timeless? It is often the wisdom it carries and the fundamental truths it reveals about being human.
Celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Ashwin, Valmiki Jayanti honors Maharshi Valmiki— revered as the Adi Kavi, or the first poet, in Indian literary tradition. He is traditionally credited with composing the Ramayana, the timeless epic recounting the life, duties, and trials of Lord Rama.

According to legend, Valmiki’s journey as a poet began with a moment of grief. Moved by the sorrow of a bird whose mate had been struck down by a hunter, he uttered a verse that became the first shloka in Sanskrit poetry. This moment is traditionally associated with the birth of the poetic form in which the Ramayana was composed.

Beyond the heroic journey of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman, the Ramayana delves into enduring questions of duty (dharma), courage, loyalty, and righteousness. On Valmiki Jayanti, we celebrate not only the first poet, but the eternal power of storytelling to transform hearts and guide generations.

Shiva Parvati
A powerful demon threatens the gods in their heaven. They need a savior, who, Lord Brahma decrees, will be the son born to Shiva and Parvati. But Shiva, a badly-dressed, untidy, solitary ascetic, seems to enjoy bachelorhood. Even Parvati's unmatched beauty aided by Kama, the god of love, seems unequal to the task of enchanting the stern lord. This illustrated classic is based on Kumara Sambhava of Kalidasa.
