The Fifth Gold

Indian boxer, Nikhat Zareen, won the gold medal in the 52kg category, at the Women’s World Boxing Championship in Istanbul, Turkey, on May 19, 2022. The 25-year-old defeated Jitpong Jutamas from Thailand in the final. With this win, Nikhat became the fifth Indian women boxer to win a gold at the World Championships after Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny R.L. and Lekha K.C.

Act of Giving Back

35-year-old Veera Sekhar, a businessman from Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, started a  volunteers’ organization, ‘Friends Society’, in 2003. Through this organization, he helps 2000 families every month, along with orphans and those in need, by donating clothes, rice, and other essentials to them. In addition to this, Sekhar also conducts education awareness camps in slum areas to encourage people to send their children to school.

World AIDS Vaccine Day

World AIDS Vaccine Day is observed globally every year on May 18. The day is marked to create awareness regarding the importance of developing a vaccine to prevent Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. The day also honours scientists, health professionals and volunteers across the globe, who are working towards developing a safe and effective vaccine.

 

A Day to tour Museums

Every year across the globe, International Museum Day is celebrated on May 18. The day is observed to create awareness about the significance of museums in our society. Museums are one of the best places to expand our knowledge as they provide more information about history, science, and culture. This year in India, the National Museum in Delhi has organised several activities to mark the occasion.

Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The day falls on the full moon day in the month of Vaisakha. This year, Buddha Purnima, also known as Buddha Jayanti, is being celebrated on 16 May, 2022. On this day, devotees visit monasteries and holy shrines and recall the teachings of Gautam Buddha.

Historic Gold

The Indian men’s badminton team has created history by defeating 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0, in the Thomas Cup final, on May 15, 2022, in Bangkok. India lifted the prestigious Thomas Cup for the first time in history. With this win, India became the sixth country to win the tournament. The other five countries are Indonesia (14), China (10), Malaysia (5), Denmark (1), and Japan (1).

Cooling Cart

Four engineering students, Naveen, Shubhan Sain, Supreeth, and Vivek Chandrashekhar, from Mysore, Karnataka, have developed a cost-effective cooling cart. The cart would help  vegetable vendors to keep their products fresh while they sell, especially during the summer months. The students have built an air-cooled chamber in the cart and sourced solar energy for electricity so that the machine remains self-reliant. Team member, Vivek Chandrashekhar, said that they are planning to include more solar panels and increase the storage capacity of the cart.

Timely Help

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) head constable Sanatan Munda, saved two women passengers from coming under the train at Bhubaneswar railway station, on May 11, 2022. K. Saraswati and B Chandrama, were deboarding  the Palasa-Cuttack passenger train on platform number 3 when they slipped on the steps and fell.  Using his presence of mind, Sanathan caught Saraswathi’s hand as she was about to slip under the moving train and pulled both of them to safety. The CCTV footage of Sanatan rescuing the two women went viral on social media. 

New Change

The Sainik School Bijapur in Vijayapura, Karnataka, is one of the 25 Sainik schools in India, that provides training for boys to join the army forces. As a welcome change, the school started offering admission to girls from the academic year, 2020-2021. For the first time, the girls will now attend the regular classes on its campus for this academic year. The school was conducting online classes because of the Covid lockdown.

This is the first school in the city that gives education facilities to women dropouts. The school conducts a test to assess the aptitude of the women and enrolls them in different classes based on their results.
