New Captain

Captain Abhilasha Barak from Haryana became the first woman officer to join the Army Aviation Corps of the Indian Army as a combat pilot. The valedictory ceremony was held on 25 May, 2022, at Combat Army Aviation Training School in Nashik. She and 36 other Army pilots were awarded the coveted wings by Lieutenant General Ajay Kumar Suri. Abhilasha joined the post after completing the Combat Army Aviation Course.

Pursuing Dreams

Two years ago, Seema Kumari from Jamui district, Bihar, lost a leg in an unfortunate road accident. But this tragedy didn’t stop her from pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher. The 10-year-old has become a source of inspiration for other children of her age as she continues to attend her school by walking 1 km daily with one foot. Young Seema said that she wants to educate people in the surrounding areas by becoming a teacher.

New Chapter

Six years ago, A. Noujisha, from Kozhikode, Kerala, was a victim of domestic violence. But she didn’t lose hope and was determined to change her life for the better. Now, the 32-year-old has fulfilled her dream and joined the police force as a civil police officer with sheer perseverance and courage. A video of Noujisha and her seven-year-old son Aiham Nazal, sharing their joy, after her passing-out parade in Thrissur, has gone viral on social media.

 

Imparting Olympian Values

On 24 May, 2022, India’s first Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was launched in Odisha by Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik. The OVEP is a practical set of resources, which will be integrated into the school education system of Odisha. It aims to impart the olympian values of respect, excellence, and friendship into the minds of children and help them to become active, healthy, and responsible citizens. 

Magic Memory

2.7-year-old Saathvik Sarath, from Ernakulam, Kerala, earned his place in the India Book of Records, by recalling 52 antonyms in one minute. The toddler started practicing by remembering 12 antonyms. Then, he started learning the names of 11 states and its capital cities, days of the week, parts of a computer, along with the names of human body parts and cars. Saathvik will also be participating in the Asia Book of Records.

World Turtle Day

World Turtle Day is celebrated every year globally on May 23. Turtles are one of the oldest reptile groups. There are 300 species of turtles in the world and 129 of them are endangered. The day is observed to create awareness among people about helping turtles survive and thrive in their natural habitat. On this day, many seminars and numerous turtle protection events and activities are organised by interested communities to mark the occasion.

 

Noble Deed

Popularly known as ‘Gopi Lakkidi’, in Palakkad, Kerala, P. Gopalakrishnan, an autorickshaw driver, saves road mishap victims and takes them to hospitals, free of cost. He even accompanies the victims, sometimes in ambulances, to hospitals in Thrissur and Perinthalmanna. Due to his noble service, Gopi was appointed as the convener of the quick response team in the Lakkidi area by the motor vehicles department.

Doodle Tribute

Google paid tribute to Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt, one of India’s greatest wrestlers, with a doodle on his 144th birth anniversary, on May 22, 2022. The doodle showed an image of a strong moustachioed gentleman with a mace slung over his shoulders. Popularly known as ‘Gama Pehlwan’ or ‘The Great Gama’, the wrestler remained undefeated throughout the five decades of his career.

Busy as a Bee

World Bee Day is celebrated across the globe, every year on May 20. Bees carry pollen grains from one flower to another and facilitate the production of seeds, fruits, and nuts. The day is observed to create awareness about their importance as pollinators and their contribution in conserving our biodiversity. The day also marks the birth anniversary of Slovenian beekeeper Anton Janša, who is known as the pioneer of modern beekeeping.

World Metrology Day is celebrated every year on May 20.  Metrology is the scientific study of measurements and plays a vital role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and many more fields. The day is observed to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. The Metre Convention, also known as the Treaty of the Metre, is dedicated to creating a global uniformity on units of measurement.
