Dairy brand Amul has lately been creating doodles about topical affairs. In a new doodle with the caption ‘Jalwa in javelin’, Amul wishes to India’s javelin throwers, Neeraj Chopra, and Shivpal in the men’s category, and Annu Rani in the women’s category, the very best for their participation in the Tokyo Olympics.

Yesterday’s Google doodle celebrated the 160th birth anniversary of Kadambini Ganguly, the first female Western medicine practitioner in India who broke multiple barriers. Born in Bihar in 1861, Ganguly was the first woman to pass the entrance examination for the University of Calcutta as well as gain admission into Calcutta Medical College.

Majestic Moss

India has discovered a plant species! Polar biologists discovered a moss species at Larsemann Hills close to Bharati, a remote research station in Antarctica during an expedition in 2017. This has been the first of its kind discovery. Honouring the discovery, scientists based in the Central University of Punjab named the moss Bryum Bharatiensis after the Hindu goddess Bharati, also known as Saraswati, who also gave the research station its name.

India at the Olympics

At long last, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games begin on the 23rd of July after being delayed for a year. In a new record, there will be 119 athletes participating from India, surpassing the previous record of 117 athletes in the 2016 Rio Olympics. India’s campaign will begin on the first day itself, with the archery qualification rounds and rowing. 

Fantastical Falls

The monsoon engulfing Western India has increased the flow in the Mahadayi river and caused Goa’s famous Dudh Sagar falls to turn into a spectacular vision of milk-white water. The waterfalls, present in the Moulem reserve forest and sanctuary, are visible from the nearby rail line connecting Goa with Bengaluru. Images on Twitter show the magnificent sight.

In the exciting finale of MasterChef Australia, Justin Narayan of Indian origin triumphed over Kishwar Chowdhury. Narayan consistently impressed the judges during the thirteenth season, becoming a fan favourite with his Indian-inspired dishes. He shared that he would like to use the future profits from his eateries to feed and educate underprivileged children in India.
