Dr Ravinder Kancherla, the founder of the Global Hospitals Group, has pledged over 350 crores, which is about 70% of his wealth, to building a not-for-profit medical education, research and innovation institute in Hyderabad. The institute would help provide a new model for sustainable development of medical infrastructure and has been declared a first-of-its-kind project in India.

Aisha Nazia, a 26-year-old mechanical engineer from Kozhikode, has become the only Indian woman to be selected for the FIFA Master programme. An avid football fan, Aisha is one of only 32 candidates across the world who would avail the opportunity to pursue the FIFA endorsed post-graduate sports executive programme in three universities across Europe. Despite being one of the three candidates receiving a merit scholarship, Aisha plans to use crowdfunding as a means to raise the remainder of her course fees. 

The Way to a Cleaner Tomorrow

Indore, the cleanest city in India according to the Swachh Bharat Survey, has now added another feather to its cap by becoming India’s first water-plus city. According to government guidelines, a city would be declared water-plus if all its domestic and industrial wastewater is treated to a satisfactory level as per norms laid down by the Central Pollution Control Board. 

The Kindness of Strangers

In a heartwarming move, 600 milkmen from Assam came together to donate 1 lakh rupees to a higher secondary school in a financial crisis. The milkmen, who belong to a cooperative society, agreed to donate 15 paise from every litre of milk sold to collect 1 lakh rupees until now. They stated that this donation was the first instalment and declared their intention to continue helping the school for as long as possible. 

Women Triumph in Border Forces

In a first for the Indian border forces, two women officers, who had joined Indo-Tibetan Border Police through the UPSC exam, were inducted in a combat role as they took on the position of Assistant Commandants. This move up was even more special for Diksha Kumar, whose father is also an ITBP officer and was proudly present at her attestation ceremony at the ITBP Academy in Mussoorie. 

Schools Rally Against COVID

In further news of the fight against COVID, 14 states are planning to reopen schools for grades 10 to 12, given the sustained low rate of infections. The Health Ministry reported that 50% of all teachers across the country have been vaccinated, thus raising hopes for normalcy to resume in educational institutes in states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi and others.

Earlier this month, Komaki, a Delhi based Electric Vehicle producer, launched the XGT X5 model electric scooter, specially designed for the elderly and persons with disabilities. The three-wheeled scooter has special features that simplify parking, reduce chances of collision and ensure superior balance. 

Navy Milestone

In a major milestone for the Indian Navy, the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant returned to Kochi on Sunday, after the successful completion of its five-day test run. The carrier being proved satisfactory in all parameters is especially commendable given the restrictions and challenges posed by the COVID pandemic. Further rounds of testing have been planned before the final delivery of the carrier in 2022 which will hopefully coincide with India’s 75th Independence Day.

Rajasthan’s ‘Padman’

Medical student Mahendra Rathore of Harsaur, a town in Rajasthan, has been working tirelessly throughout the pandemic to better menstrual hygiene in rural regions. The son of a social worker, Mahendra cites his late mother as his inspiration for this mission to raise awareness and distribute free sanitary napkins to women. Despite facing many challenges regarding funding and attitudes towards menstruation, he continues to power through to pay tribute to his mother’s vision. 

The Power of Youth

Teen volunteers in Bengaluru raised 3.3 lakh to aid three remote Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Anekal Taluk. The group of teens, led by Aadiv Reki, worked under the Project Breathe initiative and used the funds to supply centres with medical kits and oxygen concentrators.
