Striking Gold

A teenager from Bhopal has made India proud by winning a team Gold medal at Cadet Youth World Archery Championship held in Poland’s Rocklaw City on Sunday. Kumar trained hard and performed excellently in his first international tournament despite facing a personal tragedy when he lost his mother to COVID-19 in May, earlier this year. 

Iconic Giani

Giani Gurcharan Singh was one among the millions who lost everything during the Partition. He had to leave all his possessions and move from Lyallpur in Pakistan and settle as a refugee in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. But what he didn’t leave behind were the skills and experience in making traditional sweets. The shop that he set up in Delhi has now become a multi-crore business and has turned into a popular brand name among the people of Delhi. Currently run by Taranjeet, the grandson of Giani, the business has expanded and evolved without forgetting its legacy. Taranjeet has also made sure the business keeps up with the changes that have become necessary due to the pandemic.

Making It Big

Karthika Raghu and Rahul Raj, two young doctors from the tribal community Irula, have come out with flying colours this academic year. After completing their house surgency period they are ready to serve the people of Attappadi, a tribal hamlet in Kerala, which has witnessed several infant deaths and premature births. The two doctors thank their families and mentors for their success. 

Super Coach

V. Prabhu, a 42-year-old basketball coach from Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, is an example of kindness and passion. He has been coaching underprivileged children for free since 2000. Being a class 10 dropout did not hinder him in helping his students achieve their dreams. Some of his pupils, like Akilan Pari, who plays in the pro-basketball league, have made it big. As a country that has a lot of untapped potential in sports, which often goes unrecognised, we need more people like Prabhu in our midst.

Fruits of Labour

Proving that prosperity is indeed the fruit of labour, a check dam built by villagers of Bhompura is brimming with water post the recent spell of rain in eastern Rajasthan. The dam was built entirely on the initiative of the villagers, who contributed 45 lakhs to hire equipment and construct the dam through months of labour. Their hard work has paid off since the dam now has enough water stored to fulfil all their drinking water and domestic needs. 

IAF Triumphs

Amidst the growing panic over the Afghanistan crisis, the IAF squadron C-17 Globemaster III, successfully evacuated over 200 Indians from war-torn Kabul in the past few days. This operation was a success in spite of various obstacles like Indian Embassy employees not being able to reach the airport and general turmoil caused by panic-stricken citizens at the airbase.

Shattering the Glass Ceiling

In a historic move forward, Justice B.V. Nagarathna, a judge with the Karnataka High Court, has been recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court, leading to the possibility of her becoming India’s first female Chief Justice in 2027. Among the nine judges recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, Justice Nagarathna is accompanied by two other women judges, Justice Hima Kohi and Justice Bela Trivedi. 

Electricity From Garbage

Taking inspiration from the ideas given by collector P. Madhusudhan Reddy, residents of Kanjirangal village of Sivanganga district in Tamilnadu, have started producing electricity from the waste produced by the village. They are set to get more waste from Sivaganga municipality to increase the production of electricity. In a world that is burning up non-renewable sources, sustainable alternatives should be encouraged and promoted. 

Challenge S.O.L.V.E.D.

Manasa Gonchigar, a 25-year-old entrepreneur from Bengaluru, is one of the ten teams which won the agri-enterprise challenge S.O.L.V.E.D. (Social Objectives-Led Volunteer Enterprise Developed) and was felicitated by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Singh Thakur. Her startup company, PureScan AI, helps players in the food supply chain and assists them in making informed choices in food safety. Granddaughter of a farmer, Gonchigar’s company is preparing an optical device that tests the aflatoxin, which is a type of mould found in food that can cause liver damage and cancer, assessment of maize, chillies and peanuts.

Freedom Fighter Fights Off COVID

On India’s 75th Independence Day, the news of 98-year-old freedom fighter Ishwarlal Dave beating Covid-19 has garnered attention. Dave attributed his recovery to yoga, which he has been practising for 20 years now. The freedom fighter and his wife were felicitated on the eve of Independence day by Ahmedabad District Collector, Sandip Sangle. Ishwarlar Dave also reminisced about the Quit India movement, which he was a part of, and about his various acts of rebellion and protest during the freedom struggle.
