The Sky’s the Limit

Gandham Bhavan Jai, from Kurnool, has become the youngest person to scale Mount Elbrus (5642 meters), the highest peak in Europe and one of the seven highest summits in the world. The eight-year-old proudly displayed the tricolour upon reaching the summit on September 18. He was accompanied by two other mountaineers- K.Sankaraiah from Anantapur and Anmish Varma from Vizag. The team will be back in India on September 23.

World Rhino Day

World Rhino Day is celebrated on September 22 to preserve the rhino species from the threat of poaching and the possibility of natural extinction. In India, the one-horned rhino is increasing in numbers due to the conservation initiatives taken by the government. Throughout the world, Wildlife groups, NGOs and concerned people mark this day as these species are still considered susceptible.

Automated Puppet Show

Sajeesh Pulavar entertains people by introducing robotics and automation in shadow puppetry. For the first time in the history of puppetry in India, leather puppets moved in a three-minute show with the help of robotics to perform the epic, Ramayana, in Kerala. Sandeep hopes to revive the interest of people in puppetry again through this unique representation of the art.

Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas is celebrated all over India on September 14 every year to raise awareness about the language and commemorate the event when it was adopted as one of the official languages of India. Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language, written in the Devanagiri script and was recognised and adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India in 1949 as one of the country’s official languages. The nation celebrated Hindi Diwas yesterday and educational institutions conducted programmes where students were encouraged to write essays and stories in Hindi.

Gothraprabha

‘Gothraprabha’ is a project rolled out to help tribal students from Wayanad in the higher education sector. On Monday, September 13, as many as 13 students got admission to SB College, Changanassery, thanks to the project launched by the district administration in March this year. The project is the brainchild of Dr K P Nitheesh Kumar, a Wayanad native and the first doctorate holder in social work among all the tribal communities in the state. 

National Engineer’s Day

India celebrates Engineer’s Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great Indian engineer, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, on September 15 every year. Engineer’s Day is celebrated to pay tribute to Bharat Ratna Visvesvaraya, regarded as the ‘Father of Modern Mysore.’ He constructed the famous Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in the city. He brought significant reforms in banking, education, commerce, agriculture, irrigation and industrialisation.

SEED USA by NRI Syed Hussaini

Syed Hussaini pursued higher education abroad and got employment in Dallas, Texas, in the 1970s because he received monetary aid from Nizam’s Charitable Trust in Hyderabad. In 2009 he took a step to help Indian students who needed financial assistance, by setting up the organisation Support for Educational and Economic Development (SEED) USA. This organisation has provided health, education, and monetary aid to the underprivileged people in India during the pandemic. 

Cops Turn Teachers

Prasenjit Chatterjee, the officer-in-charge of the south-west traffic guard in Kolkata, is helping children from the slum near Majherhat railway station by arranging classes for them with the aid of his subordinates. He makes sure the kids attend regular coaching classes to help them with their studies since they can’t afford smartphones or books. The coaching class conducted by these officers is making sure these children keep up with academics even though they can’t attend schools.

The Young Eco-Hero from India

Ayaan Shankta, a 12-year-old environmental activist from Mumbai, has been named a 2021 International Young Eco-Hero to recognise his efforts to solve challenging environmental problems. He won this title for his project Conservation and Rehabilitation of Powai Lake. He is one of the 25 young environmental activists from across the globe honoured by the Action For Nature as a 2021 International Young Eco-Hero, an award that recognises eco-conscious youth aged 8 to 16 who are taking crucial steps to solve tough environmental problems.
