Plants from Plastics

Ashok Kumar, from Madurai, decided to do something when he found tons of plastic water bottles thrown on the roadside, constituting a large portion of garbage. He now collects empty bottles and fills them with soil to plant herbs and medicinal plants. He has found plants like oregano, tulsi, and veldt grapes. He then donates the plants to people, who are interested in them.

The Magical Gardener

Patayat Sahu of Nandol village in Odisha, was overjoyed when he got a mention in the Prime Minister’s Mann Ki Baat, on September 26, 2021. The 65-year-old farmer has grown around 30,000 varieties of medicinal plants and documented them in his manuscript. Following the radio program, visitors are coming in large numbers to the farmer’s garden.

High Five

World Heart Day was observed on September 29, to remind people to take care of their hearts. To keep our hearts in the pink of health, we should add barley, berries, mixed nuts, fatty fish and oatmeal to our daily diet. These five foods are extremely healthy for our heart and regularly keep our cholesterol under check.

Mission Afforestation

Khirod Jena, a former army man, has planted 20,000 trees on public spaces and roadsides across 11 villages since 2005. A resident of Kalashree village in Odisha, Jena decided to plant trees after getting inspired by a similar initiative taken by a local teacher, Kishore Chanda Das. Jena aims to plant over one lakh fruit trees in the future.

The Terrific Trio

Jobis Joseph, a native of Kattappana town in Kerala, never forgot that he belongs to the family of farmers, even though he migrated to Ireland ten years ago. Jobis cultivated vegetables and fruits, with his other Malayali friends, Shabu Paul and Brijoy John, in the farmland allotted to them. Their hard work yielded fruits as they won the best organic vegetable and fruit grower prize in a country-level farm exhibition, held in South Dublin on September 4, 2021.

World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27 September every year, globally. For any country, tourism goes hand in hand with the economy. India has plenty of beautiful places that would pique the interest of an explorer. Adding the top tourist destinations in India to your bucket list is a great start to celebrating World Tourism Day.

Happy Birthday Google

Google is celebrating its 23rd birthday today. The company was established officially on this day in 1998. To celebrate this occasion, our favourite search engine came up with an animated doodle on its homepage. The current CEO of Google is Mr Sundar Pichai. There are currently billions of searches on Google in more than 150 languages. 

Bibliophile’s Haven

A campaign, known as Kitab Daan, was started this January in Bihar’s Purnia district. The mission of this campaign was to set up libraries in each panchayat of Purnia. Now, Purnia, which has a low literacy rate of 52 percent, has become the first district to have a library functioning in each of its panchayats. Young students and bibliophiles in the rural areas of Purnia are benefitting by reading books and journals from these libraries.

Almost Done

66% of the adult population in India has received at least one dose of vaccine and 23% received both doses, according to a recent report from the government. Union Health Secretary, Rajesh Bhushan noted that the average daily dose has increased from 43.41 lakh in July to 59.19 lakh in August. It is a major step towards India becoming a fully vaccinated country.

Teacher of the Street

Deepak Narayan Nayak has turned walls into classrooms to teach the children of his village. Deepak is a teacher in the tribal village of Joba Attpara, located in the district of West Bengal. He has painted backboards on the walls of the houses and taught children on the streets for the past year. The local schools have shut down since March 2020 due to the covid restrictions.
