The Nine-day Festival

Navratri is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India, during which nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped. The festival marks the victory of good over evil and it is celebrated over nine nights with great zeal and enthusiasm. During Navratri, devotees fast for nine days. This year, the festival begins on October 7 and ends with Vijaya Dashami on October 15.

Revival of Rare Crafts

Rajat Kumar Panigrahi, a lecturer from Nuapada district in Odisha, has travelled to nearly 1000 villages in the region, to document rare crafts and art forms. He documented them on his YouTube channel, ‘Matir Kala’. Some of his recordings include folk-instrument makers of Nuapada, Ghumra dance of Kalahandi, Dalkhai folk dance of Bargarh, the folk culture of Chuktia Bhunjia tribe of Nuapada and the folk dance of Sambalpur.

Fully Protected

The Muthuvan tribes of Muthuvakudi village, in Theni district, Tamil Nadu, have managed well with the pandemic, strictly following the isolation measures and sticking to their traditional diet. As a result, not even one person in the village, which comprises 35 families, has so far contracted Covid 19. Muthuvakudi is in a reserved forest. The villagers spent most of their time inside their homes during the lockdown period. 

Handwoven with Pride

The largest handwoven Indian National flag, made from Khadi and weighing 1000 kg, was unfurled on top of a high mountain overlooking the Leh valley in Ladakh, by Lieutenant Governor R.K. Mathur, on October 2, 2021. The ceremony was held to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence and the 152nd Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The flag is made by Khadi Dyers and Printers, of  Mumbai, Maharashtra.

A Day for Animal Lovers

Every year on October 4, World Animal Day is celebrated to emphasise the importance of caring for all animal species and recognising their rights. The lives of animals are profoundly affected by the actions of humans. Hence, the celebration of this day aims to encourage people towards making the world a better place for them. The day is also known as Animal Lovers Day.

90 Crore Mark

India has administered over 900 million vaccines so far, according to a recent report from the Health Minister. The Government further informed that more than five crore unutilised vaccine doses are still available in all States and Union Territories. The first phase of the Vaccination drive was launched on January 16, 2021.

United We Stand

The practice, which began on August 15, 2017, has become a daily routine for the residents of Jammikunta town in Telangana. Every morning at 7:58 am, people stop their work and stand still for 52 seconds as the national anthem is played over speakers installed in 16 locations in the town. Here is a great example of love and respect for the nation.

Bapu’s Birthday

Saturday, October 2, 2021, marks the 152nd birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. On Gandhi Jayanti, as the occasion is known, the country will pay homage to the father of the nation. Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Bapu, was born on October 2, 1964, in Porbandar, Gujarat. Gandhi also shares a birthday with Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, born in 1904.

Birthday Doodle

Google paid tribute to the late Tamil actor Sivaji Ganesan on his 93rd Birth Anniversary on October 1, with an eye-catching doodle. Sivaji Ganesan was born in Villupuram district in Tamil Nādu. The actor has appeared in over 300 films and was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award by the Indian Government in 1997.
