Effective Solar

61-year-old Dhamodharan has been using solar panels to generate electricity for his tea stall, for the past six months. He has placed two solar panels in front of his tea stall inside the Mahindra Tech Park, in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu. The solar panels have been cost-effective for his business as he has not spent a single rupee on electricity bills after the installation.

Maha Ashtami

The eighth day of Navratri is known as Maha Ashtami. This year, Maha Ashtami is celebrated on October 13, 2021. The day is also known as Durga Ashtami as it is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. Ashtami is also the day for Kumari Puja, in which nine young girls, symbolising the goddess, are worshipped. Ashtami is one of the important days of the festival.

Innovative Invention

A group of second-year students from the Government Engineering College in Thrissur, Kerala, have developed a water-level monitoring system to conserve water by reducing wastage and promoting rainwater harvesting. The engineering students were one of the top nine teams from the country in the recent global hackathon, organized by IBM. They are also the only team of students from Kerala, to qualify for the final round.

One Step Closer

The Indian women’s shuttlers team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Uber Cup, with an impressive 4-1 victory over Scotland. The singles wins of shuttlers Aditi Bhatt and Tasnim Mir sealed the fate in India’s favour, on Tuesday. India is now second in Group B and will face Thailand on Wednesday. The Indian team has twice reached the semifinals of the tournament in the past.

Dream Come True

Aditi Maheshwari recently became the British High Commissioner to India for a day. The 20-year-old, from Rajasthan, won the ‘High Commissioner for the Day’ contest, which was conducted to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child. As the UK’s diplomat in India, Aditi experienced a broad variety of diplomatic activities alongside Ministers Kwasi Kwarteng and Raj Kumar Singh. Aditi is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s in Physical Science from Delhi University.

The Magical Voice

Suchetha Satish, has earned her place in the Guinness Book of World Records, by singing 120 songs in 120 languages in 7 hours and 20 minutes. The 16-year-old, accomplished this feat during a concert ‘Music Beyond Borders’ in Dubai, on August 19, 2021. By achieving this feat, the young Suchetha has broken the record created by another Indian, Kesiraju Srinivas, who sang in 76 languages, in 2008.

Girl Power

The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated every year on October 11, to empower and amplify the voices of young girls and safeguard their rights. The day is celebrated to promote the progress of women and girls, who represent half of the world’s population. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child.

E-Voting for the Future

The Telangana government has developed the nation’s first smartphone-based e-voting solution. The software helps the voters including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, to vote through their mobile phones. The application has a detailed help section with tutorial videos to aid its users and the use of AI solutions enables three-stage authentication of voters. A dry run to test the software will be held in the Khammam district soon.

Five years ago, Balireddy Suribabu started a hockey academy at Nakkapalli, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with 10 students. Now, the armed reserve force constable’s academy has 180 students. 20 boys, who were trained in the academy, have played at the state level. Suribabu, a former hockey player, joined the police force on sports quota. He set up the academy to give something back to the game which earned him a job and fame.

Indian Air Force Day

Indian Air Force (IAF) Day is proudly celebrated on October 8 in India. Every year, it is celebrated at Hindon Air Force Station, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The IAF was established on October 8, 1932 and it is ranked the fourth largest and powerful Air Force in the world. The day is celebrated to honour the selfless efforts and sacrifices of our jawans and officers.
