Doodle Lens

Google paid tribute to the 108th birth anniversary of Czech chemist Otto Wichterle with a unique doodle on 27 October, 2021. The chemist invented the modern soft contact lens, now used by an estimated 140 million people across the globe. According to Google, the doodle would enlighten people with new insight on the scientist, regardless of whether they use contact lenses or not. 

Recycling Cycles

Sanathan Selvan, from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, is spreading a new initiative of recycling cycles. Selvan and his team collect old, discarded cycles and then refurbish them for a new user. Till now, the team has collected fifty old cycles and fixed them with the help of local mechanics. Twenty-five of these renovated cycles have been given to those in need.

Sharing Smiles

12-year-old Kasyap Ram from Mookkuthala, Kerala, narrates stories and sings songs for his audience through his YouTube channel, Love Laugh Live with Ani. Kasyap has been confined to his wheelchair for the past two years as he suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy that causes the muscles to weaken. However, it has not stopped Kasyap from achieving success. His YouTube channel won him a place in the India Book of Records for being an inspiration to other children with disabilities. Kashyap currently has 17,200 subscribers.

International Artist Day is celebrated globally on October 25th. The day is marked to celebrate all kinds of art forms such as paintings, photography, architecture, music. The day also honors artists for their creativity and contribution to society. Through this celebration, we show our respect and admiration for the passion and hard work of all  artists. 

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams

On October 22, 2021, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) released the online quota of Special Entry Darshan (SED) tickets for November and December, on its official website. The TTD provided a statement in a press release that the Slotted Sarva Darshan (SSD) tickets quota for November would be released on October 23, 2021. Currently, the pilgrim footfall at Tirumala is less than 30,000 a day.

Parotta with Love

73-year-old Balakrishnan and his 66-year-old wife Lakshmi, from Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, run an eatery that sells parottas/parathas for just Rs 2 per piece. Three decades ago, the couple started their business named ‘Amma’. They sold parotta at a lower price to make it affordable to everyone. When they first started, the price of a parotta was just 25 paise. As time passed, they gradually increased it to Rs 2 and decided not to change any further.

Young Talent

Vidyun R. Hebbar, from Bangalore, Karnataka, recently won the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021 award for his photograph of a tent spider taken in a car park. The class 5 student of BGS National Public School, has won the award at the contest organized by the Natural History Museum, London. The award ceremony was held virtually on Wednesday.

One-Billion Mark

On 21 October, 2021, India completed 100 crore vaccinations in a span of nine months. With this, the country achieved a new milestone and joined the exclusive club of nations that have administered 1 billion Covid-19 doses. Until now, this milestone had been achieved only by China. According to a recent report from the government, 75 percent of the eligible population has taken the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Fun Learning

Principal Arvind Tiwari found a unique way to get his students interested in coming back to school, post-Covid lockdown. He painted his school, Utkramit Madhya Vidyalaya, in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, to resemble a train coach, waiting for passengers to enter. Also, the school floors have been painted as a giant Snakes-and-Ladders board game so that the students can enjoy playing in their free time. 

Super 300

Anand Prasad Gope, from Ranchi District, Jharkhand, may not have fulfilled his dream to make it to the Indian football team, but he has been giving free football coaching to interested youths since 2013. The 30-year-old now trains 300 youths, of which 250 of them are girls. Among the girls, Soni Munda and Anita Kumari, have been selected to attend the camp for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His twenty-five students have represented Jharkhand in various national-level tournaments.
