Happy Birthday

Google paid tribute to the Indian cell biologist Dr Kamal Ranadive, with a special doodle on her 104th Birth Anniversary on November 8. Kamal Ranadive was born in Pune and is best known for her groundbreaking research in cancer. Kamal Ranadive and her eleven colleagues founded the Indian Women Scientists’ Association in 1973, to support women in science.

Changing Lives

In 2001, Dinesh Kumar, a pickup autorickshaw driver started Volley Friends Sports Centre (VFSC) to save the youth of his village Payambra, Kozhikode District, Kerala, from alcohol abuse. Twenty years later, the 49-year-old has produced four national team players, six state team players, and many others at the district level. Thirty players also got jobs in the Railways, Army, and Air Force.

World Vegan Day

Every year, World Vegan Day is celebrated on November 1. The day is marked to celebrate vegan food and highlight the benefits of consuming a plant-based diet. Vegan food reduces the risks of many diseases and provides us with healthier alternatives to satisfy our hunger. The recipes of dairy-free sweets such as Vegan Gudh Ke Laddoo, Khajoor Roll, Murmura Ladoo, Coconut Pancakes with Besan Halwa Mousse can be prepared on this Diwali to celebrate the festive season.  

Formation Day

On 1 November, 2021, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Haryana, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh are all celebrating their respective formation day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his good wishes to these states on their special day. The day is celebrated as Kerala Piravi Day in Kerala, Karnataka Rajyotsava in Karnataka and Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava in Chhattisgarh. Kerala, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh were formed in 1956. Haryana and Chhattisgarh were formed in the years 1966 and 2000 respectively.

Checkmate

Dr Neenu George became Kerala’s first person to win silver at the World Amateur Chess Championship held at Rhodes in Greece. The 35-year-old is currently working as the Head of Department and Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce at Bharata Mata College, Thrikkakara. Neenu George is from Ernakulam. Her sister Neelima George is also a national-level chess player. 

Record-winning Singer

Vishnu K.R, from Thrissur, Kerala, recently gained a place in the India Book of Records by singing ten folk songs at a stretch for 20 minutes and 13 seconds. The 25-year-old had impeded speech since his birth but with practice and treatment with homeopathy, he improved his speech and got better over a span of five years. Vishnu has also penned five folk songs and 30 poems. 

The New Meta

On 28 October, 2021, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is changing its name to Meta, to reflect its focus on building the metaverse. Zuckerberg also said that this new change would bring its different apps and technologies together under one new brand. The name of the apps the company builds – Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger will remain the same. 

Happy Internet Day

Every year, International Internet Day is celebrated on October 29. The day marks the anniversary of the first electronic message that was sent between two computers on October 29, 1969. The internet has monumentally changed the lives of people, making it unthinkable to live in a world without it. In India, 90 percent of the population use the internet for communicating with each other and around 45 percent use the network for online transactions.

Woman Engineer of the Year

Padma Shri awardee Sharada Srinivasan has been chosen as one of the three recipients of the Woman Engineer of the Year award in 2021. The title is awarded by the Indian National Academy, to women who have made significant contributions to the fields of technology and engineering. Sharada is a professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore, Karnataka. The other two recipients of the award are Ms Madhumita Chakravarti and Ms Vartika Shukla.

Day for Audiovisual Heritage

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is celebrated every year on October 27. The day is marked to create awareness about the need to preserve audio-visual documents. Audio-visual documents tell us stories about the lives of people and their cultures from all over the world. Competitions, special screenings and panel conversations are being organized on this day to promote the significance of these documents.
