Real Heroes of India

From Rahibai Soma Popere, a tribal farmer known as Seed Mother, Manjamma Jogayati, the first trans-president of Karnataka Janapada Academy, Krishnammal Jagannathan, the social worker who propagates the philosophy of non-violence, to 102-year-old Nanda Prusty, who provided free education to children in Jaipur, these unsung heroes were presented with Padma Awards on November 8, 2021, for their inspiring and path-breaking  work.

Extension of Service

27-year-old Darpan Ahluwalia, from Punjab, believes that her decision to become an IPS officer, after completing her medical degree, is not a change of career but an extension of what she has been doing in the past. She also hopes that she will be more approachable to people, particularly women in her new role. Ahluwalia is the topper of the 73rd Batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS). 

Cracking Code

Ritika from Badarpur, Delhi, cleared NEET in 2021 with the help of books and by using classes from YouTube. Though she could not afford private coaching, she aced the entrance exam with her self-preparation and with the guidance she received from her teachers and Principal. Ritika is a student of Sarvodya Kanya Vidyalaya, Molarband and scored 93% in Class XII.

Young Leaders

This year on November 14, 220 students of Rajasthan got an opportunity to be members of the State Assembly. To mark the occasion of Children’s Day and the birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister – Jawaharlal Nehru, the government held an Assembly session for the students to educate them on the functioning of the House.

Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja, the four-day festival, is mainly celebrated in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and some parts of Nepal. This year, the festival began on November 8. Dedicated to lord Surya, the third day is considered as the main day of the festival and is being celebrated on November 10, 2021. During this auspicious period, devotees fast for the well-being of their families. 

Friendship Peak

43-year-old Sanjeev Gohli, from Vadodara, Gujarat, travelled to Himachal Pradesh with his friend Pushpak Kotiya to scale Mount Friendship, also known as Friendship Peak. In 2001, Sanjeev was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a progressive vision disorder. Though Sanjeev lost his vision, he followed his passion for mountaineering to scale the 17,000-ft Himalayan Peak with the help of his friend.

Well-deserved

Harekala Hajabba was awarded the Padma Shri on November 8, 2021, by President Ram Nath Govind at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. Hajabba is an orange vendor from Harekala village in Mangalore, Karnataka. He was honoured with the award for building a government primary school and high school in his village, with the money he had saved and donations from people and politicians who saw his commitment.

World Science Day

World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated worldwide on November 10. The day is marked to highlight the importance of science in society. The recent pandemic has made us realize the crucial role science plays in the survival of humankind. The day is also marked to encourage people to help each other for the better functioning of society.

Pioneer Learning

The Mahatma Gandhi English medium schools in Rajasthan, will become the first in north India, to conduct pre-primary classes for children aged three years and above. These pre-primary classes will be spread across three years – Nursery, KG1 and KG 2 in the existing buildings of the schools. The number of students per class will be limited to twenty-five to ensure effective student-teacher communication.

World Radiography Day

Every year, World Radiography Day is celebrated on November 8. Radiographers across the world celebrate this day to commemorate the discovery of X-radiation on November 8, 1895. The day is observed to spread awareness about radiographic imaging which plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The occasion is additionally marked to understand the significant role that radiologists play in modern healthcare.
