Memorable Performance

The 45-year-old Chidambara Nataraja, son of Hamsa Awardee Kondapalli Veerabhadraiah Bhagavatar, is a well-known Mridangam artist in Kadapa District, Andhra Pradesh. On 17 November, 2021, he played 18 tablas at a time at a program in Hyderabad. The videos of him performing this feat, under the name Navaraga Tarangini, have been sent for consideration into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Saviour Farmer

Sathyanarayana Beleri, from Kerala, grows 650 varieties of traditional rice in a 25-cent artificially created paddy field, since his land is not conducive for the cultivation of paddy. On 11 November, 2021, he was presented with the Plant Genome Saviour Farmer Reward, by Union Minister for Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar, in Delhi. The techniques applied by Sathyanarayana also impressed the National Gene Bank in Delhi and he was given 30 varieties of rice to conserve.    

Women Power

Matilda Kullu, from Sundargarh District, Odisha, recently entered Forbes India’s W-Power 2021 list, for her work during the outbreak of Covid-19. The 45-year-old ASHA worker has been donning the role of a health worker, motivator and counsellor, for the villagers in Sundargarh District, since 2005. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated Matilda for her dedication and achievement.  

Farming with Love

Dr Deepak Rudrappa, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon from Bangalore, Karnataka, started farming not for commercial gains but to get close to nature. He converted a barren two-acre land, which he bought in 2017, into agricultural land. In the last four years, the land has seen the growth of twenty Ayurvedic trees, eighteen types of fruit trees, a wide range of vegetables, and an apiary which produces three types of honey. 

Kitchen Gardens

The District Administration of Trichy, Tamil Nadu, has started encouraging all the government schools to open kitchen gardens, where they can grow vegetables on their own, for their mid-day meals. This scheme aims to make all government schools self-sufficient and to ensure there is no reduction in the quality of food served to students.

Child Prodigy

Seven-year-old Noel Alexander from Kochi, Kerala, holds an Asia Book of Records for recalling the countries of origin of 120 multinational companies, just with their official logos. The Class I student has recently entered the India Book of Records for performing the same feat in three minutes and 40 seconds. Noel, who shows interest in the stock exchange and mutual funds, is also keen on monitoring the shares of these companies.

The Government Higher Secondary School in Somarasampettai, Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu, has re-enrolled 50 school dropouts this year as part of a special drive. This drive, initiated by Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, aims to bring young potential dropouts back to classrooms as the teachers go door to door, to identify and re-admit them.

Continuing the Legacy

33-year-old Jyoti Nainwal, from Dehradun, graduated as an officer from the Officers Training Academy. She is the widow of Naik Deepak Nainwal, who was martyred during a terrorist encounter in Kulgam District, Jammu and Kashmir. Jyoti, after the death of her husband in 2018, was motivated by her mother to join the army and is determined to provide the best possible lives for her two children.

Clean Sweep

On 21 November, 2021, India beat New Zealand by 73 runs in the third and final T20 International (T20I),to win the three-match series 3-0 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This win was the second clean sweep for the Indian Cricket Team against New Zealand in a T20I series, having registered a 5-0 win over the Kiwis in January 2020.

Happy Gurpurab

Gurpurab, also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti, is celebrated in India and different parts of the world, on 19 November 2021, as the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. Guru Nanak was one of the ten celebrated Sikh gurus. On this day, devotees offer their prayers at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The day is celebrated with enthusiasm, joy, and festivities.
