Biodegradable Paper Cups

Tea Time Group, the largest network of tea franchise outlets in India, recently launched its eco-friendly initiative of offering 100 percent biodegradable paper cups to people in the Nationwide Awards, 2021, Hyderabad. The organization has taken this initiative of expanding its products in a different field to reach more customers and to reduce wastes and pollution in production.

Future in Fencing

The youth of the Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh, especially girls, are considering a career in Fencing, as a few of them have won the national-level tournaments. Fencing was introduced in Srikakulam six years ago. Now, around eighty enthusiastic students are learning the sport. Many have landed government jobs and secured admission for higher studies under the sports quota. They have also participated in state and national-level competitions.

New Miss Universe

21-year-old Harnaaz Sandhu from Chandigarh, India, was crowned as Miss Universe 2021, at Universe Dome in Eilat, Israel. Harnaaz beat 79 contestants from various countries, including the first and second runners-up from Paraguay and South Africa, to win the crown. India has won the crown twice in 1994 with Sushmita Sen and in 2000 with Lara Dutta.

Boost to Tourism

On December 13, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to inaugurate the Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi, which would connect Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple to the Ganga river. This improvement in the infrastructure of the ancient Varanasi temple is expected to give a boost to tourism, not only in the city but also in the nearby Buddhist pilgrimage site of Sarnath.

A Final Salute

100-year-old World War II veteran Colonel Prithipal Singh Gill (retd), passed away peacefully on December 5, 2021. Born into a family with army roots, Prithipal Singh Gill was the only officer in India to serve in all the three defence services – the Indian army, Navy and Air Force, for 48 years. He commanded the 71 Medium Regiment and fought in the Sialkot sector during the India-Pakistan War in 1965.

Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day is observed annually across the globe, on December 10. The day is celebrated to create awareness about the absolute rights to which all humans are entitled, irrespective of their race, religion, property, national origin, sex, language, political and other opinions, birth or any other status. The day is also marked to ensure the social and physical well-being of all the people in the world.

Legacy of a Great Teacher

Teacher and Padma Shri Awardee Nanda Prusty, popularly known as Nanda Master, passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, on December 7, 2021, while undergoing treatment for Covid-19. For the past seventy years, the 104-year-old was educating children and senior citizens of his village, free of cost. He was presented with the Padma Shri on 9 November, 2021, for his immense contribution.

Spreading the Wings of Yoga

Nouf al-Marwaai is the first certified Yoga Instructor in Saudi as she played an important role in legalizing yoga in her country. Born with an auto-immune disease, Nouf traveled to India and defeated both lupus and cancer with the help of yoga. She was the first Saudi-national to be felicitated with Padma Shri Award in 2018, for her role in spreading awareness about the significance of yoga across the world.

Conserving Native Livestock

Susanta Kumar Dash, a professor at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, has helped the state to register eight of its native livestock breeds and secure their Intellectual Property rights, for the past twenty years. Since 2004, the animal geneticist has been working on the native livestock breed conservation. Susanta Kumar believes that Breed Registration is essential for documenting the animal genetic resource.
