National Consumer Rights Day

National Consumer Rights Day is celebrated annually in India on December 24. The day is marked to create awareness among the consumers about their rights and responsibilities. The day is also known as National Consumer Day, to commemorate 24 December, 1986, when the Consumer Protection Act received the approval of the President of India. Meanwhile, World Consumer Rights Day is observed every year on 15 March.

Dreams Come True

Roshni Iyer, from Thane, Maharashtra, has been recently commissioned as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force (IAF). The 23-year-old said that she aspired to be a pilot and dreamt of serving the country from a very young age. The first three women to be commissioned as fighter pilots in the IAF, were Flight Lieutenant Avani Chaturvedi, Flight Lieutenant Mohana Singh and Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth.

National Mathematics Day

National Mathematics Day is celebrated annually in India on December 22. The day is marked to honour the birth anniversary of the renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Born in 1887, in Erode, Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan was a prodigious mathematician who discovered his own theorems and independently compiled 3900 results. He died at the young age of 32, on 26 April, 1920.

A Quest to Preserve

Though his fascination to climb trees had resulted in a spinal-cord injury which confined him to a wheelchair, 29-year-old Adaikkalam Anandhan from Aruppukottai Town, Tamil Nadu, never gave up his quest to find and preserve lost plant seeds. Till now, Anandhan has retrieved four varieties of vegetable seeds, which had almost become extinct. He also has a collection of seeds of thirty native vegetables, which he distributes to farmers to cultivate.

Winter is Here

On December 21, 2021, Google marked the beginning of the winter season with an animated doodle. The animated doodle featured a hedgehog covered in snow. Termed as the Winter Solstice, the day marks the beginning of the winter season in the northern hemisphere. The season that began on 21 December, 2021, will end on 20 March, 2022.

Innovation Enthusiast

35-year-old R Yuveraju, an aeronautical engineer in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu,  recently came up with his new innovation – a portable oxygen concentrator, upon seeing the struggle of people, who had to run to get oxygen concentrators during the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, the drones developed by Yuveraju were purchased by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), to disinfect streets in Madurai and Rajapalayam.

Historic Win

28-year-old Kidambi Srikanth, won a historic silver in the Men’s Singles Final at the World Badminton Championship, against Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, on December 19, 2021. The 20 -year-old Lakshya Sen, also won the Bronze in this championship. It is the first time that India has won two medals in the Men’s Singles at the World Badminton Championship.

 

International Human Solidarity Day

International Human Solidarity Day is celebrated annually on December 20. The day is marked to create awareness among the public, regarding the importance of solidarity in the global arena. According to the United Nations, the day is designed to celebrate our unity in diversity. The day is also observed to encourage new initiatives aimed at removing poverty and other world problems. 

New Chanel CEO

On December 14, 2021, French fashion house Chanel, one of the biggest luxury goods groups in the world, named Leena Nair as its new global CEO. The 52-year-old alumnus of XLRI Jamshedpur had joined HUL, the Indian subsidiary of Unilever in 1992. Nair recently stepped down as the Chief of Human Resources, Unilever, to join the French luxury group.

Remembering the Unifier

On December 15, 2021, India paid tribute to the nation’s first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister – Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his 71st death anniversary. Famously known as the Iron Man of India and Unifier of the Nation, Vallabhbhai Patel was responsible for the integration of more than five hundred princely states into India, before and after the nation got its independence in 1947.
