Surprise Tour

The video of 69-year-old Ammini Amma, from Cherpu village, Kerala, with her grandchildren, hoisting the national flag in front of their small hut on 26 January, 2022, went viral, after it was uploaded by headmaster Praveen Kumar on social media. To honour the enthusiasm of the children in the video, Ammini Amma along with the teachers and seven students of CNN High School including her grandchildren, were given a surprise tour by the Indian Navy on 9 February, 2022. The team visited Southern Naval Command, Indian Naval Ship Magar, a Landing Ship (LST), Indian Naval Maritime Museum, and INS Dronacharya, the Gunnery training establishment, at Fort Kochi. 

Oscar Nominations 2022

‘Writing with Fire’, directed by Delhi-based filmmakers Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas, has won an Oscar nomination for the Best Documentary Feature category. The documentary is the story of fearless Dalit women journalists, who stand by victims of caste and gender violence. It is also the first time an Indian documentary has been nominated for an Academy Award.

World Cancer Day

Every year, World Cancer Day is observed globally on February 4. Cancer is the world’s second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The day is marked to create awareness about cancer and encourage its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment among people. It is also observed to remove the stigma associated with this condition. 

 

Noble Gesture

Vijay Kumar Chansoriya, a teacher of a government primary school in Khandia village, Madhya Pradesh, has donated Rs 40 lakh, which he received from his employee provident fund and gratuity, to poor students. He made this announcement at a program organized for him by his colleagues on the day of his retirement. Chansoriya said that we should do whatever good we can to lessen the suffering in the world and that he had taken this decision with the consent of his wife and children.

Ganesh Jayanti 2022

Ganesh Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha. The festival is observed on Shukla  Paksha Chaturthi during the Magha lunar month. This year, Ganesh Jayanti is being celebrated in India on 4 February, 2022. On this day, devotees fast and worship Lord Ganesha. The day is also celebrated by different names such as Maghi Ganesh Jayanti, Magha Shukla Chaturthi, Maghi Ganpati, Tikund Chaturthi and Varad Chaturthi.

Worker turned President

25 years ago, Bheemavva, from Bagalkot district, Karnataka, migrated to Kundapur taluk of Udupi district, with her family. In December, 2020, Bheemavva, a daily wage worker in her 50s, contested the panchayat election and became the president of Tallur grama panchayat in Kundapur taluk. She was encouraged to contest by Karun Poojary, a former member of Kundapur taluk panchayat, who supported her after witnessing her simplicity and sincerity. 

Vidyadan Initiative

Teacher-turned-sub-inspector Bakhat Singh from Brijpur village in Panna district, Madhya Pradesh, recently started a study center-cum-library on the premises of police station to impart education, free of cost, to underprivileged children. The 41-year-old teaches students from Class 4 onwards between 7 am and 10 am and also those who aspire to appear for various competitive  examinations. He started the Vidyadan initiative after witnessing poverty and illiteracy in his village. 

Successful Sisters

Nine-year-old Nirupama Ratheesh and her seven-year-old sister Niranjana Ratheesh, from Kakkanad, Kerala, are not only adept in Bharatanatyam and sloka chanting but can also recite difficult Sanskrit words. Niranjana earned her name in the British World Records, Asian World Records, and Kalam’s World Records for the fastest recitation of Sandhya Naama Keerthanams and Nirupama made her place in the Raaba Book of World Records for Bharatanatyam along with earning ‘Ilam Bharata Mani’ award for her classical dance.

Youth Parliament Member

18-year-old Gaddam Meghana became the first Indian-origin teenager to get elected as a Youth Parliament member representing the Waikato Parliament segment in New Zealand. Born and brought up in New Zealand, Meghana used to take part in various social service activities including raising funds for children and orphans, who migrated from Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria. Meghana said that she was nominated for this position due to the recognition given by the New Zealand government for her social service activities.

Rooftop Garden

Uma Maheswar Rao from Tirupati city, Andhra Pradesh, has turned his terrace into a rooftop garden because of his passion for plants and trees. The 58-year-old has been growing a variety of vegetables, including leafy greens, tomato, okra, mushroom, mint, and 15-20 varieties of flowering plants, for more than four years. He even encourages his neighbours and visitors to create gardens on their rooftops by providing saplings and the required technical assistance.
