22-year-old Anvita Nair recently met Karnataka Health Commissioner, D. Randeep, who welcomed her idea to treat  pre and post partum mental health issues faced by women. Nine months ago, Anvita Nair, from Bangalore, Karnataka, started an online petition campaign BeatTheBlues, to help women in their pre and post natal period. She asked the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka, to make a policy to ensure that every health centre in the state conducts mandatory screening of women during her pregnancy and the postpartum period.  

Going Global

17-year-olds Sarah Varghese and Devika Girish, from St. Peter’s Senior Secondary School, Kadayiruppu, Kerala, have been selected to represent India at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in Atlanta, United States (US). The class XII students prepared a highly porous polymer membrane with exceptional oil absorption properties with the help of Dr Prasanth Raghavan and his team from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). Their project was selected among the final 20 projects in the Research and Innovation (IRIS) National Science Fair, 2022.

Yields of Hard Work

Five years ago, Sivapriya and Haripriya, teenage sisters from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, started farming, when their family suffered a major financial crisis. They cultivated cabbage, tomato, and cauliflower in the 10 cents of land around their house. Now, the sisters farm on 80 cents of land given to them by three landowners and use organic fertilizers to maintain the nutrient balance and healthy growth of plants. Farming has become a major source of income for the family and they have regular customers, who directly buy vegetables from them. 

Chess Wizard

16-year-old Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa defeated 31-year-old World champion Magnus Carlsen, in the eighth round of the Airthings Masters – an online rapid chess competition, on 21 February, 2022. Praggnanandhaa, nicknamed Pragg, from Chennai, Tamil Nadu,  won with black pieces in 39 moves. He also became the third Indian and youngest player to beat Carlsen, after Pentala Harikrishna and Viswanathan Anand.

New Record

Parvathy Unnikrishnan, from Eroor, Kerala, has been learning tabla from the age of seven. Now, she has entered the India Book of Records, 2022, for playing tabla for the longest duration. The 10-year-old played the tabla in different layas for 46 minutes and 36 seconds on 19 January, 2022. She had also attended an online class by tabla maestro Anuradha Pal, during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Reaching New heights

Kallichanda Nishan Nanaiah’s short film Alpha Beta Gamma is now being screened at the Berlin Film Festival.  A native of Kodagu district, Karnataka, Nishan graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. The short film revolves around three people stuck in a flat during the COVID-19 lockdown. The movie premiered at the International Film Festival in Goa and was among the 25 short films that were selected by the Indian Panorama. 

International Mother language Day

Every year, International Mother language Day is observed globally on February 21. The day is celebrated to promote and preserve multilingual diversity. According to the census analysis in 2011, there are 22 scheduled languages in India and 96.71 percent of the Indian population use one of these languages as their mother tongue. Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, and Awadhi are some of the widely spoken mother tongues in India. There are also 21 tribal languages and 74 tribal dialects which are used by the rest of the population.

3-0 Sweep

The Indian Cricket Team defeated West Indies by 17 runs in the third and final T20 International (T20I) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on 20 February, 2022. With this win, the team registered a 3-0 clean sweep over the West Indies in the three-match series. This win was also a third successive clean sweep for Rohit Sharma as full-time skipper, having previously defeated West Indies (0-3) in the ODIs and New Zealand (0-3) in the T20Is.

Juice of Kindness

Krishna Nayak has been quenching the thirst of visually challenged people by offering them juice, free of cost. Nayak, who owns a juice centre in Dharwad, Karnataka, said that he was inspired by the work of the visually challenged Hindustani and Carnatic vocalist, late Puttaraj Gawai, and views his act as a payback to society. He also added that people should provide selfless service according to their abilities without expecting any rewards or returns.

Best places to visit

Aymanam, a small village in Kottayam city, Kerala, has been featured in Conde Nast’s 30 best places in the world to visit in 2022. Conde Nast, a global mass media company, mentioned that Aymanam, bordered by Vembanad lake and Meenachil river, encourages people to take a writing retreat and to live a simple life close to nature. Some of the other Indian destinations featured in the list are Bhimtal in Uttarakhand and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra.
