International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually, across the globe, on March 8. The day is marked to acknowledge and celebrate the cultural, political and socio economic achievements of women, all over the world. The day also aims to spread awareness about gender equality and encourages everyone to work towards creating a society with no gender bias.

Magnificent Start

The Indian Cricket Team won their opening match of the Women’s World Cup, 2022, by defeating Pakistan by 107 runs. Pooja Vastrakar, Smriti Mandhana, and Sneh Rana, helped India to set a 245 run-target for Pakistan, with their stunning half-centuries. Indian bowlers, led by left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad, contributed to the victory, by dismissing Pakistan for 137 runs, in 43 overs.

Winning trio

Indian shooting trio, Esha Singh, Shri Nivetha and Ruchita Vinerkar, won the gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol team event of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup, in Cairo, Egypt. The trio won the nation’s third medal and a second gold on 3 March, 2022. On 1 March, 2022, Saurabh Chaudhary won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event. 

 

National Safety Day

Every year, National Safety Day is observed in India on March 4, by the National Safety Council of India. The day is marked to create awareness among the general public and employees and encourage their commitment to work safely. The day also aims to highlight the importance of following safety measures and regulations, which would prevent workplace mishaps. This day was first commemorated on the foundation day of the National Safety Council, in 1972.

 

Remembering Bharat Kokila

On her 73rd death anniversary, India paid tribute to Sarojini Naidu, on March 2, 2022. Known as ‘Bharat Kokila’ or ‘Nightingale of India’, Sarojini Naidu was one of the prominent figures in India’s Independence struggle. Born on 13 February, 1879, Naidu was the first woman to become the governor of Uttar Pradesh. She was also the first Indian woman President of the Indian National Congress in 1925.

Nightingale Nurse Award

50-year-old Daniel Vijayaraj was the first male nurse from India, to receive the prestigious Nightingale Award, instituted by the National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust, in England. A native of Keeladi village in Tamil Nadu, Vijayaraj joined South Tees Hospital Middlesbrough, England, in 2001. Now, he is a specialist in dialysis and cardioversion and also guides nursing students. The memory of the care that was provided by nurses for his ailing mother, encouraged the young Vijayaraj to pursue his career in nursing.

Officer turns Curator

Vinay Goswami, a Deputy Director, Office of Commissioner of Schools, Gandhinagar, visits archaeological structures on his weekly offs and holidays. Goswami uploads his visits on his YouTube channel, Health Holding, so that people can learn more about these little-known places. He also prepares documents on these places to preserve the architectural heritage of Gujarat. Currently, he has around 25,000 subscribers.

National Science Day

In India, National Science Day is celebrated every year on February 28. The day is marked to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect. Dr Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman or Sir C.V. Raman discovered the Raman effect in 1928 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for this game-changing discovery in 1930. The day is also marked to encourage Indian youth to develop their interest in science and understand its significance in our lives.

Return to India

On 27 February, 2022, at around 3 am, 250 Indian students from war-torn Ukraine arrived in India. Then, at around 9.20 am, another evacuation flight with 240 Indians landed at IGI, followed by the day’s third flight at 5:35 pm, with 198 on board. Till now, 688 Indian nationals have returned from Bucharest, Romania, and Budapest, Hungary.

Wonder Woman

64-year-old Bhavani Jogi, from Mangaluru, Karnataka, recently won three gold, a silver, and a bronze medal in the 35th Annual Masters (Open) Athletic Championship, held in Sri Lanka. She had also previously won 200 medals in field and track events. Jogi said that she would continue her journey in sports and try to win gold medals. In 2017, Bhavani retired as a nursing superintendent from Government Lady Goschen Hospital, Mangaluru.
