International Forest Day

International Forest Day is observed every year globally on March 21. The day is marked to raise awareness about the significance and contribution of all types of forests. Forest plays an important role in providing food, shelter and water, not only to animals, but also to human beings. Hence, the day is celebrated to make people understand the importance of forest conservation, both for the present and future generations.

Illuminating Village

After 18 years, 33-year-old Kedar Prasad Mahto, from Ramgarh, Jharkhand, had succeeded in making a turbine on a rivulet flowing near his village. Mahto made this turbine, which is now generating 5 Kilowatt (kW) electricity, to solve the problem of frequent power cuts in his village. Mahto said that he started working on this project when he was still a school student and succeeded in generating 12 volts of electricity in 2004.

World Sleep Day

Every year, World Sleep Day is observed globally on the third Friday of March. This year, World Sleep Day is being celebrated on 18 March, 2022. Lack of sleep can lead to several health issues. This day is marked to raise awareness about the importance of good sleep. It is necessary for everyone to have at least 7-8 hours of sleep, so that our bodies can rest and rejuvenate. 

Happy Holi

The festival of colours is here. This year, Holi is being celebrated on 18 March, 2022. The day is marked to celebrate the victory of good over evil. Holi is celebrated with a lot of colours, joy and happiness. People across the nation celebrate the festival by smearing friends and relatives with colours and exchanging sweets and wishes.

 

National Vaccination Day

National Vaccination Day is observed every year in India, on March 16. The day is marked to raise awareness about vaccination and its importance. The day also holds more significance as the nation has recently completed COVID-19 vaccination for over 180 crore people. The day is also observed to mark the anniversary of the first dose of the Oral Polio vaccine given in India, in 1995.

Holika Dahan

Holi is one of the prominent festivals celebrated all over India. The festival begins with the celebrations of Holika Dahan, also known as Choti Holi. This year, Holika Dahan falls on 17 March, 2022, and the festival of colours falls on 18 March, 2022. On Holika Dahan, people gather with their friends and relatives around the bonfire and celebrate the victory of good over evil by singing and dancing. 

Doodle Celebrations

On March 16, 2022, Google celebrated the 200th birth anniversary of famous French painter Rosa Bonheur, whose successful career inspired a generation of women in the arts. The doodle featured an animated image of Bonheur, painting a flock of sleep on a canvas. Born in 1822, Bonheur was considered one of the most renowned female painters of the 19th century.

 

Silver Win

20-year-old Indian badminton player, Lakshya Sen, won a silver medal in the finals of the German Open 2022, on March 13, 2022. Sen, who hails from Almora, Uttarakhand, put up a good fight against Kunlavut Vitidsarn, from Thailand, who claimed the title. Earlier, the Indian badminton player defeated the reigning world champion and World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen, in the semi-finals of the tournament.

A Day for Mathematics

International Day of Mathematics is observed every year globally, on March 14. The day is also celebrated as Pi Day, by  math lovers, for its numeric representation of 3.14. The day is marked to highlight the importance of mathematics in our education. In 2019, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), recognized this day during its 40th general conference.

Successful Venture

Fondly known as ‘Mama’ (Grandmother in Sambalpuri), Santhoshini Mishra, from Sambalpur, Odisha, has been running a successful catering business, for the past thirty-six years. The 74-year-old, started this venture with a small catering team at the age of 38, to support her family. Now, she is the most sought-after caterer in the town and her team has 100 members, with a majority of them being women.
