Promoting Communal Harmony

To promote  communal harmony, the famous Chennakeshava temple in Belur town, Karnataka, continued its age-old tradition of starting its rathotsava (chariot festival) celebrations, after reciting the verses of the Quran. Though it is not known exactly when this tradition started, the temple manual, which dates back to 1932, mentions the existence of this tradition. The temple was built by the Hoysala king, Vishnuvardhana, to commemorate his victories against the Cholas in 1116 AD.

Tribute to the Martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh

On April 13, 2022, India paid tribute to those who were martyred in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, 103 years ago. . Hundreds of people who were protesting peacefully against the Rowlatt Act on Baisakhi Day in April 1919, at Jallianwala Bagh, were indiscriminately fired at and killed. The action was initiated by Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer. 

Baisakhi 2022

Baisakhi marks the beginning of the spring season. On this day, farmers express their gratitude to God, for the crop they harvested  during the year. This year, Baisakhi, which also marks the beginning of the new year, is being celebrated on 14 April, 2022. The festival is celebrated annually with great joy and enthusiasm in Haryana and Punjab. 

Ambedkar Jayanti

Every year, Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated in India, on April 14. The day is marked to commemorate the birth anniversary of the first Law and Justice Minister of India, Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Born in 1891, Ambedkar is known as the father of the Indian Constitution. It was under his leadership that the world’s longest written constitution was drafted by the constituent assembly.

Homemade Electric Car

67-year-old Antony John, a career consultant, and environmentalist, from Kerala, has built a unique electric car that reduces maintenance costs and the environmental impacts of burning fossil fuels. The vehicle, named ‘Pulkoodu’, has a speed of 25 km per hour and is legally cleared for its use on the roads. Antony is currently working on a vehicle model that could be even more affordable to people, than Pulkoodu.

Timely Action

Ramesh Chand, a train passenger, lost his suitcase containing 350 grams of gold, worth Rs 20 lakh, at the KSR Railway Station, in Bangalore, Karnataka, on April 5, 2022. Fortunately, he got his suitcase back in a few hours, due to the efforts of Gururaj, a home guard. Gururaj, who has been working with the Government Railway Police, received much appreciation for his good work, from his seniors.

Heroic Act

31-year-old constable Netresh Sharma, has emerged as a hero, for saving a child and three women from a house that had been set ablaze by a mob, in Karauli district, Rajasthan. A picture of him with a child in his arms amid burning houses has gone viral on social media. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot spoke to Netresh and appreciated his humanism and bravery.

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2022

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), is celebrated every year on April 6. The day is marked to acknowledge the significant role of sports and physical activities in our daily lives. The day also aims to make people understand the positive impact that physical activities and sports have on the peace and harmony of various communities all over the world.

Storming into the Semifinals

Indian boxer Sumit entered the semifinals of the Thailand Open in the 75kg category, after defeating Timur Nurseitov in Phuket, Thailand, on April 5, 2022. With this win, Sumit became the fourth Indian to enter the semifinals. India’s Ashish Kumar (81kg), Monika (48kg) and Manisha (57kg) have already qualified for the semifinals. In 2019, India had won eight medals, including one gold, four silver, and three bronze medals, in the tournament.

World Health Day

Health is fundamental to human well-being and happiness. World Health Day is celebrated all over the world annually on April 7. The day is observed to create awareness about the importance of good health and quality of life. The day is also celebrated to recognize the contributions of our medical faculty all over the world. This year will mark the seventy-first anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO).
