Gold Win

Harshada Sharad Garud became India’s first weightlifter to win a gold medal, on May 2, 2022, at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships in Heraklion, Greece. Harshada claimed the yellow metal on the opening day of the competition in the women’s 45kg category. The other Indians who had won medals previously at the championship are Mirabai Chanu (Bronze in 2013) and Achinta Sheuli (Silver in 2021).

Innovative Jacket

Khushboo Patel, the founder of Tetrel Innovations from Gujarat, designed an insulated jacket for Indian soldiers to help them withstand extreme temperatures. The product was made lighter and more efficient than the one currently used by the armed forces. In addition to this, the AI technology ensures comfortable warmth to the wearer, irrespective of the outside temperature. 

Miniature artist

20-year-old Annam Mahita from Swarna village in Andhra Pradesh has engraved 67,230 letters of shlokas from Mahabharata on 810 pencil leads. Now, she aims to earn her name in the Guinness World Records book, by creating miniature art with verses from the Quran and the Bible in Arabic and Hebrew respectively. Mahita, who has completed her graduation in commerce, aspires to become a civil servant.

 

World Tuna Day

World Tuna Day is celebrated every year on May 2. The day is observed to spread awareness about conserving the tuna fish, as it has become an endangered species due to the high demand for their meat. The population of its species has declined by more than 97 percent in the past few years. To save the Tuna from extinction, the United Nations General Assembly, in 2016, voted to observe this day as World Tuna Day.

Satyajit Ray’s Birth Anniversary

On his 101st birth anniversary on 2 May, 2022, India paid tribute to film-maker Satyajit Ray. Regarded as one of the greatest Indian filmmakers in the world, Ray was born in 1921, in Calcutta. He was also the recipient of many awards, including 36 Indian National Film Awards, a Golden Lion, and an Academy Honorary Award in 1992.  In 1992, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, by the Government of India.

Timely Action

TNSTC bus driver V. Arumugasamy and conductor K. Esakki alias Kuttisamy, saved the life of a 69-year-old passenger Sahul Hameed, who reported chest pain, by taking him to a government hospital on time for treatment, on April 27, 2022. Their timely efforts were appreciated by the public and higher officials of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC). Indian shuttler and Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu qualified for the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships after defeating Yue Yann Jaslyn Hooi of Singapore in the women’s singles competition in Manila, Philippines, on 28 April, 2022. The Indian men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also advanced to the quarterfinals, with their win over Taichi Saito and Akira Koga from Japan.

Chasing World Cup Dreams

Against all odds, Anita Kumari, along with six other girls from Jharkhand, have been selected for the forthcoming FIFA Under-17 World Cup team. The footballer, despite facing poverty and nutritional deficiency at a young age, was determined to do her best and fulfil her dream. Asha Devi, Anita’s mother, who managed to get all five of her daughters educated, hopes that the success of her daughter would help their family to come out of poverty. Anita is currently undergoing training along with the team at Jamshedpur.

This acquisition is considered as one of the biggest deals in the world of technology. In his press statement, Musk said that he wants to make the social media network better by enhancing it with new features, defeating the spam bots and making the algorithms open source to increase trust.
