Recipe for Zero Hunger

Thirteen college students from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, volunteered to distribute food to the destitute, in 2020. Even after the end of the pandemic period, they didn’t stop their work. They started an NGO named, ‘Suvadugal’(Traces), and are now a group of 70 members. ‘Suvadugal’ has provided healthy food to over 100 elderly and destitute people per day, for the past three years. Apart from food distribution, they also organise social awareness campaigns among school children and clean public spaces. 

Bringing Museums to Doorstep

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum in Mumbai, started an initiative named, ‘Museum on Wheels’, in 2015, to areas to bring museums to the doorsteps of children, for free As a part of this initiative, buses filled with interactive and educational displays, travel to rural areas, to give the experience of museums to children. Currently, Museum on Wheels has two buses and has travelled to more than 700 cities and villages across the country. 

Day for Food Safety

Low-quality food affects both an individual’s health and the economic stability of a country. World Food Safety Day is observed annually on 7 June, to create awareness about good-quality food and to encourage people to adopt safe food practices. The theme of this year is, ‘Food Standards Save Lives’. People can visit nearby food safety fair and attend educational workshops to observe this day. 

Happy Environment Day

Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June, with a different theme. The day is observed to spread awareness about the importance of protecting our environment and to promote eco-friendly practices. This year, the theme, ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution, is created to encourage people to stop the usage of plastics, as it is harmful for our health, economy and environment. 

New Wings

It is difficult for former bonded labourers to find work, even after being rescued by the government. To provide livelihood options for rescued bonded labourers, IAS officer Alby John Verghese from Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, launched ‘Siragugal (Wings) Bricks, a brick kiln, where workers can make and bake bricks. So far, the initiative has helped over 400 people. 

Free of Stigma

Preethi Srinivasan’s life changed when she was confined to a wheelchair at the age of 18. But she overcame her struggles and graduated in psychology with flying colours. With her mother, Preethi decided to help people with disabilities and their families, through donations, educational and employment opportunities. In 2021, Preethi launched, ‘The Soulfree INSPIRE Centre’, the first Integrated Spinal Rehabilitation Centre in India. The centre also provides personalised treatment for people with life-altering spinal cord injuries and paralysis. 

Telangana Formation Day

Did you know that there are currently 33 districts in Telangana state? Telangana, the 29th and youngest state of India, was formed on 2 June, 2014, due to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. The day is observed as, ‘Telangana Formation Day’, to celebrate the achievements of the people of Telangana and to honour its cultural heritage. 

Seven Civil Servants

Seven Haryana civil services (HCS) officers from the same batch, have cleared the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil services examination with flying colours, this year. Officers Anjali Garg, Sakshi, Kamal Chaudhary, Pragati Rani, Rahul Sangwan, Arti and Bhawesh Khyalia, are currently under training at the Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA) in Gurgaon. 

Wonder Mom

Junior veterinary officer Kallu Rajeswari from Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, recently won two medals in the ‘Asia-Pacific Open Masters Sports Meet-2003’, held in South Korea. Rajeshwari, who is in her early 40s, won a gold medal in the discus throw and a silver medal in the 5-kilometre walk. She hopes to inspire other mothers to follow their dreams with her dedication to sports. 

No Tobacco Day 

World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on 31 May, by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The day is observed to spread awareness about the ill effects of tobacco consumption on our health. This year, the theme, ‘We Need Food, Not Tobacco’, is created to encourage tobacco growers to stop tobacco farming and produce more nutrient-rich and environment-friendly crops.
