MSME day

Micro-Small and Medium sized Enterprises (MSME),are important for the development of a country. Every year, 27 June is celebrated as World MSME day, to acknowledge the contribution of MSMEs in strengthening the global economy and sustainable development. The theme for this year is, ‘Resilience and Rebuilding: MSMEs for Sustainable Development’. On 6 April, 2017, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), designated 27 June as the Micro-Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day, in its 74th Plenary.

O2 from H20

Solaire Initiatives Pvt Ltd, a startup in Kolkata, West Bengal, has recently introduced a device named, ‘OM Redox’, which produces oxygen from water just by pressing a switch. Dr Soumyajit Roy and his wife Dr Pei Liang, the co-founders of the startup, said in their statement on 23 June, 2022, that their machine generates oxygen which is three and half times purer than that one gets from a concentrator. The machine was featured in a book released by Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Science and Technology Minister, during the commemoration of 75 years of Independence. 

Next Generation Leaders

Dr Risha Jasmine Nathan, a Delhi-based forensic scientist, has recently earned her name in list of the world’s top 50 leading gastronomy game-changers. She was selected from more than 400 candidates across 30 territories and joined the list of next generation leaders, who are creating sustainable solutions for the global food and drink industry. Risha’s research provided a sustainable solution to handle the problem due to water contamination in the developing world.  

Women in Diplomacy

This year, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), has adopted a resolution to designate 24 June as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy. In their statement, the UNGA said that women’s participation, on equal terms with men, is necessary at all levels of decision-making, for the achievement of peace, sustainable development, and democracy. Top female diplomats from India are Sneha Dubey, Ruchira Kamboj, Vidisha Maitra, and Poulomi Tripathi.

 

Joyful Moment

Anurag Daru, a graduate in electrical and electronics engineering from Bengaluru, Karnataka, has secured 569th rank in the All India Civil Services examination in his fifth attempt and has opted to join the Indian Police Service (IPS). His father, Manik Rao, works as a driver in the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). To celebrate his achievement, Anurag and his parents were felicitated at the KSRTC office on 22 June, 2022.

 

Patil Kaki

Inspired by her mother’s small tiffin venture, Geeta Patil started her business, Patil Kaki, to support her family in 2016. She made and sold authentic Maharashtrian dishes such as modak, puran poli, chakli, poha, and chivda, across Mumbai and Pune, with minimal investment. Now with the help of her son Vinit Patil, her business earns revenue of over one crore annually and over 3,000 orders are shipped every month. It is also to be noted that 70 percent of Patil Kaki’s employees are women who are working for the first time.

Winning hearts

The Internet lauded the timely action of Captain Monica Khanna, the commander of the SpiceJet Patna-Delhi flight, after she successfully landed the aircraft which was also overweight, on 19 June, 2022, thus saving the lives of 185 passengers. One of the engines of the plane caught fire soon after take-off, and Khanna, with the support of first officer Balpreet Singh Bhatia, switched off the affected engine and landed the aircraft safely at the airport. All passengers were unhurt.

For a Noble Cause

With their continuous efforts and determination, a group of 30 women from the tribal-dominated Badakudi village in Jeypore town, Odisha, stopped the liquor sale in their village in two months. The women started their awareness campaign in April, 2022, to end  liquor consumption deaths in Badakudi. The activists imposed a penalty of 10,000 rupees on anyone who was caught selling liquor and consuming it in their village, with the approval of village heads. The women also sought the support of the Jeypore Sub-Collector, SDPO, and Excise Officer, for their cause.

Education to Everyone

Four years ago, Ankit Thakor, an IIM-Ahmedabad alumnus, started a school in Palanpur in Banaskantha district, Gujarat, to change the students’ perception regarding their textbooks and schools. In addition to this, Thakor also launched an app named Edutor, to provide education free of cost to anyone from any part of India. Now, more than 41,000 teachers are associated with Edutor and the app has launched 11 campaigns in collaboration with the state education department under ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’.

Right to seek Safety

World Refugee Day is observed globally every year on 20 June. The day is observed to honour the strength and courage of numerous refugees across the globe, who have been forced to leave their homeland to avoid war and persecution. The theme for this year is ‘Whoever, Whatever, Whenever. Everyone has the right to seek safety.’ The day also aims to make sure that all refugees are welcomed and treated with respect, regardless of their birthplace, race or origin.
