Breaking New Grounds

Air Commodore Sanjay Sharma, recently created a new record by flying with his daughter, Flying Officer, Ananya Sharma, in the same formation of Hawk-132s, at the Air Force Station in  Bidar, Karnataka. The Indian Air Force (IAF) spokesperson, Wing Commander, Ashish Moghe, said in his statement that this was the first instance in the IAF, where a father and his daughter flew together in the same fighter formation for a mission.

Remembering the Great Leader

India paid tribute to Swami Vivekananda on his 120th death anniversary, on 4 July, 2022. Born in Calcutta on 12 January, 1863, as Narendranath Datta, Swami Vivekananda was the disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Vivekananda was known for his historical speech on religious tolerance at the World Parliament of Religion in Chicago, in 1893. The renowned spiritual leader died at the age of 39, on 4 July, 1902. 

Femina Miss India

Sini Shetty, from Karnataka, won the Femina Miss India World 2022 title, at the grand finale of Femina Miss India in Mumbai, on 3 June, 2022. Rubal Shekhawat from Rajasthan and Shinata Chauhan from Uttar Pradesh, were announced as the first and second runner-up, respectively. Former winner, Manasa Varanasi, crowned her successor, Sini Shetty, at the star-studded coronation night.  

Amphibious houses

Nanma Gireesh and Ben K. George, from Kerala, launched their startup, NestAbide, with a small team without any capital funding, in 2018, with a focus on flood-resistant technologies.  In 2021, the duo successfully designed India’s first amphibious house that could stay afloat in flood waters. Their prototype was featured on BBC’s World Podcast, ‘The Climate Question’ and both Nanma and Ben, were recently featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia List, 2022.

 

Happy Doctors’ Day

Every year, National Doctors’ Day is celebrated in India on 1 July. The day is celebrated to honour each and every doctor for their selfless contribution to humanity. The day also commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, doctor, who served as the Chief Minister of Bengal (1948-1962) and was the recipient of Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, in India. The theme for this year is ‘Family Doctors on the Front Line’.  

 

Rath Yatra 2022

The Jagannath Rath Yatra festival is celebrated annually at the well-known Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. This year, the Rath Yatra is being celebrated on 1 July. On this day, a large number of devotees gather to worship Lord Jagannath, his elder brother, Balarama and their sister, Subhadra. During the festival, three wooden chariots are pulled by devotees through the streets of Puri to the Gundicha temple.

Diamond League

Olympic gold-medalist and India’s ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, broke his own national record for the second time in a month on 30 June, 2022, and finished second at the Stockholm Diamond League, with a massive throw of 89.94m. Earlier on 14 June, 2022, the 24-year-old created a new national record throw (89.30m) at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland.

A Day for Statistics

Every year, National Statistics Day is celebrated on 29 June, in India. In 2007, the Government of India designated 29 June as National Statistics Day, to commemorate the birth anniversary of the late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, also known as the father of Indian statistics. The day is also observed to acknowledge the importance of statistics in policy formation and  socio- economic planning. The theme for this year is ‘Data for Sustainable Development’.

Men in Blue

The Indian Cricket Team defeated hosts Ireland by four runs in the second T20 International (T20I) match in Dublin, on 28 June, 2022. The opening batsmen, Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson, created a new record by registering the highest partnership for any wicket by an Indian pair in T20Is. Hooda’s maiden century and Samson’s first international fifty helped Team India to seal the series, 2-0.

For a Good Cause

Namrata Anand, a government school teacher in Patna district, Bihar, utilises her leisure time to help the children from poor families and slum areas by giving them free education and work for the welfare of differently-abled and transgender people. Namrata supports differently-abled people by providing them with artificial limbs and tricycles and has also helped transgender people in the past, with free ration during the Covid-19 pandemic.
