Guru Purnima 2022

Guru Purnima is observed every year not only in India, but also in Nepal. This year, the day is being observed on 13 July, 2022. Also known as Vyasa Purnima, the day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sage Ved Vyasa and to pay respect to  teachers. The festival is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. It is the day when Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath and when Mahavira chose his first disciple. It is also believed to be the day that Shiva, as the Adi Guru, gave knowledge of Yoga to the Saptarishi.

New Beginnings

17-year-old Prem Kumar, from Gonpura village in Phulwari Sharif area, Patna, received a Rs 2.5 Cr scholarship, to complete his education at Lafayette College, in Pennsylvania, United States. The 12th grader has been chosen along with six other students across the globe, for the ‘Dyer Fellowship’ from Lafayette College. Kumar is the first person to attend college in his family and will be pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and International Relations, in the United States.

 

Digital Vaccines

Bhargav Sri Prakash, the CEO and founder of FriendsLearn, a bio and health tech startup, was awarded the world’s first patent for a Digital Vaccine in June 2022. The digital vaccine is a non-invasive technology that uses sensory pathways like sight, touch, and hearing to create patterns of neural responses in the brain. These patterns would train children to make healthier choices, thus reducing risks of obesity and other lifestyle diseases. 

 

Spreading Positivity

32-year-old Naresh Kumar Patel and his 29-year-old wife Aarti Patel, a differently-abled couple, from Bhojpur district, Bihar, are on a mission to motivate other people like them to be optimistic and self-reliant. Naresh has started a firm,’ Aarti Enterprises’, which  provides labourers for the execution of various government schemes, including MGNREGA. Aarti has also trained over 2,000 women till now, in tailoring.

World Population Day

World Population Day is observed every year across the globe, on 11 July. Overpopulation is a major concern for every nation. The day is observed to create awareness regarding the negative impacts of population growth on the steady development of nature. This year’s theme is ‘A world of 8 billion: Towards a resilient future for all – Harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all’.

 

Following Dreams

Molly Joy from Ernakulam, Kerala, dreamed about travelling all over the world since childhood. Once her children had settled down, the 61-year-old grocery store owner started to pursue her dream. In the past ten years, she has travelled around 11 countries, including France, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States, with her savings of Rs. 10 lakh. Molly said that she would love to visit more unexplored Indian states in 2022 and would like to continue travelling till the end of life.

Inspiring with art

Inspired by his father, who was an expert weaver, 42-year-old  V. Umapathy, an art teacher from Puducherry, makes intricate pieces of art from biodegradable materials such as bamboo, husks, branches, and vegetable waste, which are inexpensive and mostly discarded. He makes these beautiful crafts to endorse sustainability in his creations. Umapathy also convinced many of his students to follow suit and pursue a career in art.

 

Travelling India on foot

53-year-old Benny Kottarathil and his 46-year-old wife Molly Benny, from Kottayam, Kerala, created a new record by covering seventeen Indian states in 216 days, on foot. They have shared their expedition on their YouTube channel, ‘Vicky’s Wonder World’. Benny and Molly started their walking expedition on 1 December, 2021 and were awarded the 2022 National Record for the ‘First Couple to Walk Around India’, by the Universal Records Forum.

 

Zoonoses Day

World Zoonoses Day is observed globally on 6 July. Zoonotic diseases such as rabies, ebola, influenza, are caused by viruses, fungi, parasites and bacteria. The day is observed to commemorate the french biologist, Louis Pasteur, who discovered and successfully  administered the first vaccine against rabies, on 6 July, 1885. The day is also marked to create awareness about zoonotic diseases that can transmit from animals to humans.

Celebrating Chocolates

World Chocolate Day, also known as International Chocolate Day, is celebrated every year globally on 7 July. Chocolates, if consumed moderately, can provide many health benefits to our body and mind, apart from being tasty. The day is celebrated by chocolate lovers all over the world. Apart from indulging themselves, people also give their favourite chocolates to their loved ones.
