Swearing-in Ceremony

On 25 July, 2022, President-elect Droupadi Murmu, was sworn in as the 15th President of India, in the Central Hall of Parliament in New Delhi. 64-year-old Murmu is the first President to be born after independence and the youngest to occupy the top constitutional post, till now. The ceremony was followed by a 21 gun salute, in honour of the nation’s new President. Chief Justice of India, N.V. Ramana administered her the oath in the presence of former President, Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Vice President, M. Venkaiah Naidu, among other dignitaries.

 

Historic Silver

Indian Olympic gold medalist, Neeraj Chopra, created a new history on 24 July, 2022, after he won silver with his historic throw (88.13m), in the men’s javelin throw final in World Championships. With this win, the 24 year old became the second Indian and first male track and field athlete to win a medal in the World Championships, after Athlete Anju Bobby George, in 2003.

IVF Day

Louise Joy Brown became the first baby to be born, through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) method, on 25 July, 1978. World Embryologist Day, also known as World IVF Day, is celebrated every year on 25 July, to commemorate the birth of the world’s first IVF baby. The day is also observed to spread awareness and acknowledge the role of embryologists in the field of reproductive medicine.

Celebrating the Musician

Google commemorated the 112th birth anniversary of German electronic music pioneer and physicist, Oskar Sala, with a doodle, on 18 July, 2022. Known as the ‘one-man orchestra’, Sala was born in Greiz, Germany, in 1910 and was known for developing and producing sound effects on a musical instrument, named ‘Mixture-Trautonium’, which introduced a unique sound to radio, movies, and television. Sala received several awards for his work and donated his original mixture-trautonium to the German Museum for Contemporary Technology, in 1995.

Mandela Day

Mandela Day, also known as Nelson Mandela International Day, is celebrated annually across the world on 18 July. The day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary and achievements of the former South African President and leader and acknowledge his 67-year-long fight against the racial discrimination and human rights abuses. The day is also observed to inspire everyone to make a positive impact in their communities, by following the ideology and vision of Mandela.

 

Third Win

Double Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu won the Singapore Open Super 500 trophy, in a gripping women’s singles final, on July 17, 2022, by defeating Wang Zhi Yi, from China. This was the third title of the season for the 27-year-old, having previously won two Super 300 crowns in Syed Modi International and Swiss Open. Sindhu will be leading the Indian charge at the Commonwealth Games, starting on July 28, 2022, in Birmingham, England.

Youth Skills Day

World Youth Skills Day is celebrated globally every year on 15 July. The day is observed to spread awareness about the importance of training youngsters across the globe with essential skills for entrepreneurship and employment. The theme for this year is ‘Transforming youth skills for the future’. The day was declared as World Youth Skills Day by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in December 2014.

First Plastic Money Shop

Licypriya Kangujam, the ten-year-old environment and climate activist, recently started an initiative to reduce single-use plastic waste in the nation. The Class V student has opened the world’s first ‘plastic money shop’ at the Delhi University (DU) and has been giving out free school stationery items, rice and saplings in exchange of single-use plastic waste deposited at her shop. In 2019, Licypriya addressed world leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Madrid, Spain, regarding the need to take an immediate climate action. 

Lighting up the Streets

For the past few-years, the residents of Ganivada village in Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, have been facing a tough time due to the lack of well-lit streets in the village. Hence, Dr Meesala Appalayya, a native of the village created a WhatsApp group, ‘Ganivada Development’, to solve this issue. Around 150 people from Ganivada, who joined the WhatsApp group, collected necessary equipment and set up 20 solar-powered street lights in the village in two months. They were inspired by tribal people’s idea of building roads through sramadhanam or voluntary work.

Major Astronomy Event

NASA, the space research agency in the United States, released a statement on 11 July, 2022, in which they mentioned that its James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the most powerful and largest telescope ever built, has produced the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe dating to 13 billion years ago. It is a major event in astronomy as thousands of galaxies, including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared, have appeared in JWST’s view for the first time. The telescope was launched on 25 December, 2021.
