Day of Charity

International Day of Charity is celebrated every year on 5 September. The day is observed to commemorate the death anniversary of Mother Teresa. It is also observed to inspire and encourage individuals and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) across the globe to participate in more charitable and volunteer work. The day was first established by the United Nations General Assembly (UGNA) in 2012.  

World Coconut Day

World Coconut Day is celebrated worldwide on 2 September. The day is observed to spread awareness about the importance and advantages of coconut. The theme of this year is ‘Growing Coconut for a better Future and Life’. Due to the efforts of Coconut Development Board (CDB), the day is prominently observed in Indian states such as Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Orissa. 

Starbucks’ new CEO

Laxman Narasimhan, formerly the CEO of Reckitt, a multinational consumer health and nutrition company, will be joining the board of Starbucks, on 1 April, 2023. The appointment of Narasimhan was announced by Starbucks on 1 September, 2022. According to their statement, Narasimhan will initially join as an incoming CEO, on 1 October, 2022, and will work closely with interim CEO, Howard Schultz, before joining the board and assuming the role. 

On top of the World

The 25-year-old Rehna Shajahan, from Kottayam district, Kerala, recently created a world record by obtaining the maximum number of online certificates in a day. She received 81 certificates in a day, due to her determination and passion to learn. Prior to this feat, the world record for maximum online certificates received in one day was 75. Rehna said that the support of her family gives her the courage and inspiration to achieve more success. 

Ganpati Bappa Morya

Ganesh Chaturthi, the day which marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, is one of the most widely-celebrated festivals in India. The festival is celebrated on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapada month. This year, the celebrations began on 31 August, 2022 and will end on 9 September, 2022. On this day, devotees pray to Lord Ganesha and offer sweets and other things to him. 

Day to write letters

World Letter Writing Day is celebrated every year worldwide on 1 September. The day is observed to recognize the significant role that letter writing played in the evolution of humans and to encourage people to take more interest in letter writing, in order to keep the tradition alive. The day was established by Australian artist, author and photographer Richard Simpkin in 2004. 

Raining Golds

Divya T.S, from Karnataka, won the women’s 10m air pistol T6 event at the national shooting trials in New Delhi, on 30 August, 2022. Though she trailed through 8-10 till the end, Divya defeated Rhythm Sangwan from Haryana, in the end with a 16-12 win, to claim the gold, at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range (DKSSR), New Delhi. Sangwan however, won two gold medals in the junior women and youth final, by defeating Uttar Pradesh’s Divanshi Dhama and Mansi Anand, respectively. 

Sports Day

National Sports Day is celebrated every year in India on 29 August. The day is commemorated to celebrate the birth anniversary of late hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand and to create awareness about importance of overall health, physical activity and participating in sports. The day is also dedicated to honour the contribution and dedication of the nation’s sports heroes and the support of their coaches, trainers and families. 

Day against Nuclear Tests

International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed every year annually on 29 August. The day is marked to create awareness about the devastating negative effects of testing nuclear weapons and to urge governments all over the globe, to put an end to such tests. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established 29 August as International Day against the Nuclear Test on 2 December, 2009. 

Against all the odds

Despite not being able to walk and having weak hands, 15-year-old Payel Pal from Balurghat district, West Bengal, topped her school in the Class X examinations and scored 80 percent, due to strong willpower and determination. Pal, a student of Kurmail Sonaulla High School, dreams of joining civil service by becoming an administrative officer so that she can serve the poor and help them in better ways.
