Mobile wala Doctor

Dr Ganesh Babu was surprised by the low number of women delivering their babies at the Barsur Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh, when he joined the centre, five years ago. To remove the communication gap between pregnant women and medical professionals, the 59-year-old medical officer, began distributing mobile phones to women, living in remote areas, so that they could be in touch with healthcare workers, even during the night, to answer their questions or even get medical help in case of an emergency.  

Interactive Touch Display

Research team, led by Professor M. Manivannan, from IIT- Madras, Tamil Nadu, have developed a new touchscreen technology, named iTad’ (Interactive Touch Active Display), to make users feel the textures of objects on display. Manivannan said that iTad can take online shopping experience to the next level, as users can touch and feel things before purchasing them on various e-commerce platforms. 

World Standards Day

World Standards Day, also known as International Standards Day, is observed every year, on 14 October, to spread awareness among consumers, policymakers, and businesses about the importance of standardisation. The process of standardisation is crucial for promoting trade and resolving technical issues. This year, the day is centered on the theme, ‘Build Back Better’. Various events are planned by different organisations, including government bodies, to observe this day. 

Day to eat eggs

Every year, World Egg Day is celebrated on the second Friday of October. This year, the day falls on 14 October. The day is observed to highlight the importance of eggs for human nutrition as the food item also lists as one of the widely consumed foods all over the world. The day was first established at the International Egg Commission’s Vienna conference, in 1996. Have a Happy Egg Day! 

Lucky Day

On 12 October, 2022, 40-year-old fish seller, Pookunju, from Mynagappally village in Kollam district, Kerala, was served with a bank attachment notice for not paying a loan amount of around Rs 12 lakh. To his surprise, he found out that he had won the Rs 70-lakh Akshaya lottery prize, one and half hour later. Pookunju said that he hopes to secure his children’s future with the money and to pay off all his debts. His luck has changed for the better indeed. 

Happy Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth, also known as Karak Chaturthi, is celebrated every year mostly in northern parts of India, during the Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month. During this day, married women worship Chauth Mata and observe a strict fast, which begins before sunrise. The women break their fast after seeing the Moon. This year, the day is being celebrated on 13 October. 

Lessons in Mountaineering

Mountaineer Jogabyasa Bhoi, a native of Rupra village in Kalahandi district, Odisha, has been training over 1000 youths including school and college students in mountaineering, for the past five years, free of cost. The 38-year-old, who had scaled the highest peaks of the continent including the Mt. Everest, imparts theoretical and practical mountaineering skills to aspiring youth every weekend and advises them to get involved with nature and understand flora and fauna to be a better mountaineer.  

Feeding the Hungry

Poonam amma, a trans woman from Mumbai, started an initiative last month to feed the poor and hungry, breakfast and lunch for just one rupee. Her organization named, ‘Khwahish Foundation’, has 5000 members of the trans community and runs a kitchen managed by 16 staff members. Currently, 700-800 people are being fed daily through this initiative and around 300 trans people provide a daily contribution of Rs 200.

World Mental Health Day is observed every year on 10 October. Mental Health is necessary for every individual as much as physical health. The day is observed to create awareness and de-stigmatize mental health and to advocate the need for advanced treatment for mental health. The theme of this year is ‘Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority’.  

Postal Week

World Post Day is celebrated every year on 9 October. The day is celebrated to highlight the importance of postal services. The Indian Department of Post, the world’s largest postal system, will celebrate the National Postal week this year from 9th to 13th October. This year, the activities for the week will be in line with the theme, ‘Post for Planet, moving a step ahead’.
