Breaking Stereotypes

Seema Devi, a housewife and mother of three teenagers, broke the gender stereotype, by becoming the first woman electric rickshaw driver in Jammu and Kashmir. Seema, who is in her mid-40s, has been driving the electric rickshaw in Nagrota town and its adjoining areas, for the past four months. She said that she got inspired by women working in different fields and added that it was her husband who has been very supportive and helpful, who taught her to drive the electric rickshaw. 

Historic Convocation

Seventy-year-old Narayana Bhat, was awarded the gold medal by Higher Education Minister, Karnataka, Ashwath Narayan, in the first-ever diploma convocation held in the nation, on 2 November, 2022. Bhat graduated with a score of 94.88 percent, from MES College, Sirsi, Karnataka, along with 106 students. In his statement, the minister said that the decision to conduct the convocation was taken to provide equal recognition for diploma students as the other students, who had taken higher education courses. 

Raising Awareness

The world witnessed its most devasting tsunami in December 2004, when the natural disaster affected 14 countries including India and Sri Lanka. Hence, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day in 2015, to spread tsunami awareness and to find methods for the reduction of risk, along with keeping track of tsunami disasters worldwide. Since then, the day is observed every year on 5 November. 

Hand-knitted shoes

Three decades ago, Mukutmoni Moirangthem, from Kakching district, Manipur, started knitting woolen shoes, as she couldn’t afford to buy new shoes for her school-going daughter. Now, she has employed around 20 people to work for her and found recognition for her work not only in India but also abroad. She was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2022, for her efforts to train and empower women. 

Making it to the Nationals

Trained by his father in just three months, Mohammed Rayan Baig, from Bengaluru, Karnataka, recently won a gold medal in the (A-01) Small Bore Free Rifle Prone (NR) Championship, 50M Men Individual event, in West Bengal. With this win, the engineering graduate qualified for the national-level shooting championship in Thiruvananthapuram, organized by the National Rifle Association of India. 

IDEI

International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI), is observed every year on 2 November. The day aims to bring attention to the crimes against journalists and to find methods to prevent violence against them, along with bringing perpetrators to justice. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), established this day on December 2013. 

Diwali is here

The festival of lights is just around the corner. Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the nation’s biggest festivals. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on 24 October. On this day, people wish their families and friends, light up their homes with diyas and fairy lights and put rangolis. The festival signifies the triumph of good over evil and celebrates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya, with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana, after 14 years in exile.  

Happy Dhanteras

Every year, Diwali begins with Dhanteras, which is considered to be an auspicious occasion to buy gold and other metals as it is believed to bring happiness and prosperity to the family. The word dhan means money and teras, symbolising the thirteenth day of the month of Ashvin. On this day, devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera, the god of wealth. This year, Dhanteras will be celebrated on 23 October. 

Extravagant Rangoli

Muskan Rajput, from Delhi, created a huge buzz online, with her creative rangoli art as her piece can last for entire duration of the festival. In her shared clip, Muskan took a circular wooden board and coloured it black, before drawing a floral mandala-type design on it. She then used colourful threads in a string-type design to complete her creative work and used nails at regular distances throughout the board. 

More Gold

Indian junior shooters, won four more medals on the sixth day of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship, in Cairo, Egypt, on 18 October, 2022. These four medals raised India’s tally to 20, including nine gold, three silver and eight bronze medals. Currently, India is ranked second behind China, who claimed eighteen golds with a total of 37 medals.
